Pulling up in the stables car park, Nasreen was excited to see what secrets it held. Tessa Farnsworth’s linking Verity and Myles was a huge breakthrough for them. It was about time they had some luck on this case, she thought, getting out of their car, closing the door. So far they had two murders and were no nearer finding a suspect than they were when they’d received the case. “There’s someone,” she said to Weekes, spying a woman wearing jodhpurs, black boots, a khaki green jacket and black hat. She put the woman in her mid to late fifties. “Excuse me!” She waved.

The slim lady stopped. Taking her identification out, Nasreen explained who she and Weekes were and why they were there. Identifying herself as the stables and riding school’s manager, Olive Kramer welcomed them, inviting them into the office, where Verity worked, she added. Nasreen liked Olive; she had a pleasant manner about her, an affable demeanour.

Sinking into her leather swivel chair, Olive’s face crumpled. “I still can’t believe it,” she said, fighting back the tears. “She was such a lovely girl. And to think she was abducted just outside in the car park sends shivers down my spine.” Dabbing her eyes with a tissue, she said, “I only wish I’d argued harder about getting cameras fitted.”

“You don’t have any cameras at all?” Weekes asked, surprised.

“No! We’ve never needed any before. Well, not until someone broke in and slashed one of the horses. I argued with the owner about installing CCTV, but she disagreed. The police found out it was the boyfriend of one of the horse owners. He was jealous of how much time his girlfriend spent here, apparently.”

“That’s awful.” Changing the subject, Weekes asked, “Who was the last person to see Verity on Thursday evening?”

“Me. I left her at her desk at around half six. Verity stays late updating the accounts.” Olive dabbed her eyes again. “I’m sorry! I told myself I wasn’t going to cry. I haven’t known her that long, but she was such a lovely girl.”

“Oh? Can I ask how long you’ve known her for?” Weekes asked.

“I started working here a little over two months ago.”

“And your predecessor? How long was she here for?”

“A long time, apparently. I was told I had large boots to fill by Winifred, the owner.”

Knowing what Weekes was driving at, Nasreen asked, “And Winifred, where is she? The reason we’re asking is that we need to know the history of this place.” She saw the understanding appear.

“She’s on holiday, I’m afraid. She’s due back next week. I’ve left a voicemail for her to inform her of Verity’s… But she’s on a cruise. I don’t know how often she’ll check her phone, though.”

Bloody cruises! While hunting for Cara Mooney, Lucy’s parents had been on a cruise. “Not to worry. What about your predecessor? Do you have a number for her?” They needed a break. She wanted to speak to someone with knowledge of the stables. “What is it, Ms Kramer?” Their interviewee was wearing a worried expression.
