EIGHT

GUNS AND DRESSES

Piper

“How long do we have to stay dressed up?” Gemma groaned. She leaned into the back of the car and pulled out our dresses. I wasn’t super pumped about our attire for the evening either, but the Delta Queens were totally in their element.

This morning, they’d stopped by my place first thing, hoping to drag me down to Nailed It for a brand new manicure. I’d reminded them I might need my gun, successfully wiggling my way out of it. When Gemma came over an hour later, she told me she had used the same excuse.

“We’ve already broken their hearts by not getting our nails done. We probably need to show a little bit of enthusiasm for the dressing up part.” I whispered to her as we walked through the door at Patty Sue’s house.

“That’s fine. But have you thought about where we can hide our guns in this getup?”

Way ahead of her, I handed her a thigh holster. It was a better option than carrying around a clutch the whole night.

“Now that’s what I’m talking about,” Gemma laughed.

I wasn’t about to tell her that part of me looked forward to seeing Jake in a tux, which was why I had stressed way too much trying to pick out the perfect dress. Where was Nancy when I really needed her?

I finally settled on a long shimmering black dress with a slit that came up mid-thigh for easy gun access. My biggest concern was having to run in high heels. How was I supposed to chase down the killer in these death traps?

“It’s about time you two arrived. Get dressed so Darla Ann can do your hair.”

A lady smiled from the corner as she coated Patty Sue’s hair with a thick layer of hairspray. I guessed it was Darla Ann. Wonderful. Before I could make a snarky comment, Rosemary scooted us upstairs to change.

“I’ll ask one last time. We can’t get out of wearing these dresses, right?” Gemma growled at her reflection in the mirror. “Can we at least take extra clothes and change once it’s over?”

That wasn’t a bad idea. We folded up our comfy clothes and shoved them in my bag. “Okay, here’s the plan. You sneak the bag to the car. I’ll cause a distraction.”

“What are you going to do?” Gemma stared at me, wondering what I was up to.

“Nothing crazy. The minute I tell them I need a high heel lesson, they won’t be paying attention to anything else.”

She smiled, nodding her head. “Smart. I like the way you think.”

Since our match in the gym, I’d promised myself to back off Gemma and give her a chance. I hadn’t fully processed what she had said about me, but there was a part of me that wondered if I agreed with her. It didn’t matter right now, though. Whether I liked it or not, we needed each other tonight.

We finished, making sure we had everything we needed before we left the room. At the bottom of the stairs, I held up the high heels and put on my best excited face.
