JACKSONVILLE BEACH TO ST. AUGUSTINE

From Jacksonville Beach, drive south on State Route A1A to Ponte Vedra Beach and continue south to Vilano Beach. Follow Route A1A as it turns inland (west) across the Vilano Beach Bridge and Vilano Causeway into St. Augustine. Turn south (left) at San Marco Avenue, which becomes S. Castillo Drive in the city’s historic district.

Driving through the elegant resort town of Ponte Vedra Beach today, it’s hard to picture it as the hardscrabble frontier mining town it was in 1915. This was just a year after two chemical engineers discovered that the beach dunes contained a mother lode of minerals like rutile and titanium, which were crucial to the steel industry.

The settlement was purchased in 1916 by American Lead Company and named Mineral Town. The mines thrived during the height of World War I, when steel was in high demand, and as a result the company built a nine-hole golf course and a clubhouse, which were the precursor of the now world-famous Ponte Vedra Inn and Club.
