Until Dad pulled out his phone and scrolled through it. I cleared my throat, but he didn’t get the message. I was about to say something when a way-too-familiar sound invaded the peace.

The sound of our neighbors singing.

The song.

The one and only song.

“It’s too early for this,” I groaned.

“At least it will get the other girls up. Relax. We’re having fun,” Dad said, and glanced at his phone.

“What? You being on your phone? I thought we were spending time together. The idea was to get away from technology. You’ve been on that almost the entire time.”

“Sorry, Bee. I’ve been checking in on your mom.”

“But Grammy is right there,” I said. “If Mom needs something, she can ask Grammy.”

“I want your mom to know she can get in touch with me too if she needs anything,” Dad reminded me.

I tried to hide my hurt, but it was hard. This getaway was for us, and here Dad was, attached to his phone because of Mom and the baby. I mean, I got why, but still.

Dad must have sensed that I was upset. “What about this? I can turn it to vibrate and only check it when I get a message. Would that help?”

“Big-time,” I said.

“It’s official. This phone will remain in my pocket while we hike, so you will get my one-hundred-percent-undivided attention. I’ll be stuck to you like glue!”

I giggled. “I like the sound of that,” I told Dad.

Then, as if they had been waiting for us to finish talking, our neighbors broke into another way-too-energizing song for that early in the morning. I covered my ears and groaned. “But that sound is a whole different story.”
