Hayden Wallace came out of his office to greet Anna. "You look like the rest of us," he said. "Don't guess you got much shut-eye last night, either."
She laughed. "Not a wink, but we did manage to get a paper on the streets."
He guided her into his office. "Whit told me you had computer troubles last night."
She took the chair he offered. He moved around behind his desk. It was covered with paperwork and reports, and he waved a big hand over the chaos. "You'd think I'd been here all my life with all this mess on my desk. I'm not too organized."
"Join the crowd," Anna said. "Your desk looks just like mine."
"So to what do I owe this unexpected but welcome visit?" he asked.
"I don't need to tell you, Chief, that the bombing last night is one of the biggest things to happen in Milbrook in a long time. I thought maybe I should stop by to see if you had any leads."
"Why don't you check with Pynchon?" he asked.
She grinned. "I can't seem to catch up with him. Besides, Whit doesn't tend to cooperate with the press. It's a prejudice he hasn't overcome."
"He is a colorful character, Miss Tyree." Wallace got to his feet and went to a window that overlooked the lawn of the city hall. "I don't want to steal his thunder, but I think I can tell you that we have isolated some suspects."
Anna was looking at his back. "Already?"
"Yes, ma'am. I can't give you any more details than that." He turned back around. "However, the people of Milbrook do need to know that we are not sitting around twiddlin' our collective thumbs."
Anna really hadn't expected to get much information, so she was fumbling for the small notebook she carried in her purse. "Do you expect arrests soon?"
"I wouldn't be surprised, but I can't give you any exact timetables."
Anna jotted down the quote. "Was the bombing connected to the burglaries?"
Wallace resumed his seat. "We think so, but again, I'm not prepared to go into details."
"What about a motive for the bombing?" Anna asked.
"I'd rather not comment on that right now, Miss Tyree."
"My reporter told me that he heard rumors from some of the officers that the daughter of the Bennings might have had some information about the burglaries. He said there was speculation she was killed to keep her quiet."
The chief shrugged. "Well, we can't say that for sure, so it's best that we don't say anything yet about motive."
"But that is a theory?" Anna asked.
"It's a theory."
Anna scribbled as fast as she could. "Whit was at the Bennings' house last night. Did he manage to elicit any information from the girl?"
"Maybe you'd better ask Whit about that," Wallace said. "How about dinner tonight, Miss Tyree?"
The question, coming in the context of the rapid-fire interview, caught Anna off guard. "Dinner?"
"I'd like to take you to dinner."
Anna actually felt her cheeks glow. "Chief, I've told you I'm involved. Besides, I wouldn't be much company. I'd probably fall asleep.
