Chapter Eight
Morning sunshine was lazy and so was Verity. She lazed on the large pool float, on her stomach, watching Everett talk with Moss. The kid looked better than he had the night before, but she supposed thatâs what a full belly and a good nightâs sleep did for a person. Oona had cleaned him up, healed some of the more grievous wounds, and then given him a sleeping draught to help him relax. He had woken with the sun and went for a run with Carrigan, and had spoken with Arien before she went in for a nap.
Apparently, her captain spent the night keeping watch, and while it did make Verity feel safe, she was worried for her girlfriend.
âPrincess?â Moss said and smiled. He seemed a bit more relaxed around her, and was sitting there in board shorts (thank you, Sithen) with his shirt off, his legs in the water.
âYes, Moss?â
âWhatâs New York like?â
She smiled again. âBig. Anonymous.â She turned on her back and sighed. âGood food when you can afford it.â
âWay too many people and not enough trees,â Everett added. âIt must have made you half mad being cooped up like that for so long.â He slid into the pool from where heâd been sitting next to Moss and leaned back against the side. âDonât think I would have been able to stand it.â
âMe or Moss?â Verity said with a wry smile.
âSince you were cooped up the longest, Princessâ¦â Everett said, brows raised in challenge. âI donât need to see your life before to know this one suits you better.â
âNew York was hard.â She turned again and looked at them. âI didnât have any friends there, didnât actually have an apartment. I rented studio space, which was like a large room with a bathroom. I painted, I ate what I could.â She shrugged. âIt wasnât life but I didnât have anything else to base it off of.â
âDid you ever go places in New York?â Moss asked and eased into the water next to Everett.
âI used to go to Central Park and sit on the great lawn on occasion. And when I had extra money I would hit up this little café in the village for crepes. I once ended up in midtown during the holidays, delivering a painting. Ended up walking past the tree.â
âPoor damn tree.â Everett shook his head, but there was a hint of a smile on his lips. âYou know, Moss, once we get things settled for Verity and sheâs wearing her crown, I bet you could convince her to take you to the city. Of course, Nassar will probably want to go, so I suggest you try to sneak out,â he said, giving Moss a friendly shove to his shoulder.
Moss looked to Verity. âWould you want to go?â
She smiled at him. âI could. I mean it would be different. We wouldnât be squatting somewhere but staying someplace nice and we could do touristy stuff.â She looked at Everett. âThough I would insist all the guard came so I could spoil you.
