Breaking and Exiting

When I drifted over to the Greek exhibits room, Zian was the first to call me on it. “Bell, what are you doing?”

“Saw something,” I told him, my eyes fixed on the statue. “It may be important.”

No sealed doors or motion detectors in this room. Near as I could tell, there was only one camera in it too, back right corner and facing the door.

“Not to tell you your business, hoss,” Kennedy chimed in. “But now’s a lousy time to change up the plan.”

“Won’t take a second,” I told her, digging out the diamond-edged scalpel from my pants pocket. Surely the glass around it worked on the same alarm system as the cases we’d cut through upstairs.

I was nearly in front of the statue when a hand grabbed me by the shoulder and its owner hissed some stern Japanese words at me.

The alarmed and disgusted tone Yukina used required no translation. But I shrugged off her shoulder and stepped onto the tile in front of the statue…Which shall hereafter be referred to as Mistake Number One.

My foot had barely put pressure on the tile when the alarm went off.

“Shit,” I snapped, taking my foot off the spot way after it mattered. Guess the floor sensors hadn’t been confined to the Edo room.

“We need to go!” Yukina whispered, grabbing my shoulder again. This time, I let her yank me back.

“No-go on the rear exit!” Zian called through the mic. “Two guards are watching and a third one’s on the way! Find some other way out!”

“What other way?!” I asked my hacker buddy as Yukina kept us out of sight.

“Damned if I know, Bell, but whatever you can find, find it sharpish!”

I did some quick calculations in my head. Our primary exit was out, thanks to Mistake Number One. The front door was an even worse idea under the circumstances. That left the roof but we’d already cut the rope up there.

I remembered the rope Yukina used to get us inside. Putting my head next to my crime partner’s ear, I whispered, “Run for the staircase. Don’t stop until you’re on the roof. I’ll be right behind you.”

“And what if you’re not?” Yukina asked as a couple of flashlight beams got closer and closer to us.

“Then you use the goods we grabbed to save your uncle,” I said, trying to sound more confident than I felt. “One way or another, I’ll figure it out.”

“You’d better,” Yukina growled back before taking off for the stairs at a dead run.

Naturally, this got the guards good and excited. All flashlight beams went straight to her like she was Lady Gaga on opening night. I yanked out my Sig from the small of my back, walked out of the doorway and fired four quick shots into the ceiling. Every flashlight beam fell off her like leaves from a tree in autumn—or the end of “not-winter”, as we Cold City natives like to call it. Accompanying this lovely sight was the sound of a slew of bodies hitting the deck in case the next set of bullets came their way.
