How Do You Solve a Problem Like a Logo?

Master bassoonist Klaus Thunemann’s greatest hits belted from the tiny speaker in Carol’s iPhone. He was just into the kicker of the woeful “J C Bach Concerto” when Ava screamed, “Uncle!”

“What? I particularly enjoy this piece. It’s devilishly difficult, don’t you think?” smirked Carol innocently. “So complex!”

“OMG, you’re giving me a complex!” moaned Ava. “We’ve been listening to bassoon solos for over an hour. You’ve made your point. Please, I’m begging you, I’ll never belittle woodwinds again! At this point I would listen to my mom’s entire collection of Neil Diamond CDs.”

Carol arched an eyebrow. This was serious. She remembered that fateful day: Ava’s parents sitting side by side on the sofa, harmonizing to Neil Diamond’s greatest hit, “Sweet Caroline”. Ava’s dad brilliantly soloed on the air drums while Ava hurled herself from the couch onto the living room floor, her face buried in the ocean-blue carpet, arms outstretched, her fist in tiny balls, pounding the floor as she cried, “Make it stop! Make it stop!”

“Truce?” inquired Carol as she arched her eyebrows.

“Truce,” said Ava, defeated. “Explosive fist bump?” Ava smiled at her best friend.

“Explosive fist bump,” Carol said as they hit their fists together. Boom!

“OK,” said Ava as she turned her attention back to the investigation. “What type of business do you think would have a logo like that?”

“Um, art stores, schools, museums…that’s all I can think of off the top of my head,” said Carol.

“I think our best bet would be an art store. The only trucks I’ve ever seen at our school were the mail trucks, FedEx….”

“Or those food trucks for the cafeteria,” added Carol.

“So…we’re looking for an art store with that logo. Got it…. Wait,” said Ava, confused. “What am I even searching on? You do realize that there are probably at least a hundred art supply stores in each state!”

“My guess is that truck is from around here. I wouldn’t drive a delivery truck a long distance in the middle of the night, with a tarp wrapped around it.”

“I agree,” said Ava with a nod. She brought up a local map on her laptop. “Nothing says suspicious like wrapping your truck up like a burrito.”

“OMG,” laughed Carol. “Actually, I could go for a burrito right now. I’m starving.”

“Me too,” said Ava.

“Me three,” came a voice from the living room.

“That woman’s hearing scares me…. I truly believe she was a bat in her previous life.”

“I heard that,” yelled Ava’s mother.

“See?” said Ava, making an I told you so face. “Alrighty,” said Ava, turning her attention back to her laptop. “A twenty-mile circle would include Livingston, Lexington, Concord, and Middleville.”

“I guess we should start with Livingston. It can’t have many art stores,” said Carol.

“Yep,” said Ava, “I’m on it.”

Luckily Livingston was a small town of twelve thousand people. Ava’s search brought up two art stores and an outdoor faux statue garden center. Nothing says sophisticated like poorly made Romanesque statues with accompanying spotlight in your front yard.

Livingston was a complete bust.
