Chapter Thirteen

An hour later, I’d finished interviewing the clerk who’d been stabbed. A drug addict had come into the store and tried to do a grab-and-go from the beer cooler. The clerk had tackled him, but the man had pulled out a knife and stabbed him. Luckily for the clerk, he’d turned to the side and the knife had skidded off one of his ribs; otherwise, he could have been seriously injured or even killed. The suspect had dropped the knife and run off.

“We got him!” Sergeant Will Toomey said, coming up behind me as I watched the ambulance leave for the hospital so the clerk could be stitched up. “Martel chased him down. That Martel doesn’t talk much, but when he runs it looks like he’s flying. That meth head didn’t stand a chance. Martel’s going to book him into jail for resisting.”

“Perfect. We’ll let the State Attorney decide on the rest of the charges tomorrow. If you all aren’t too busy, I’m going to let Sanderson take over and run with this one.”

“Except for this and some domestic crap, we’re pretty quiet tonight. It’ll be good for her to get a taste of the paperwork involved in a real case,” Toomey said. He was a tough but fair supervisor who was always willing to help a hard-working deputy start moving up the ladder. Years ago he’d moved into CID for about a month before requesting to go back on the street. He didn’t like riding a desk, but was always willing to let others give it a try.

As for Deputy Matti Sanderson, she was tough and good at her job, but you could see the gleam in her eye that said she wanted more. She’d caught this call so it was only fair that, if I was going to let a patrol officer take the lead, she should be the one.

“You want to do all the paperwork on this one?” I asked her.

“What, like an investigator?” She seemed surprised.

“Of course, Lt. Johnson will have the final say, but I don’t think he’ll mind you doing all the heavy lifting.”

“Are the other deputies going to think I’m brown-nosing?” I could tell she was excited about doing a deep dive on the case.

“Nope, they’re just going to think you’re another poor sod who’s been conned into doing higher pay-grade work without the higher pay,” I joked.

“You’re giving this to me ’cause it’s idiot proof, right?”

“Trust me, there are plenty of idiots that could screw it up. But, admittedly, this is a training-wheels case. You got the perp. You got video. He’s not going to be able to hire a real lawyer. The guy’s going down. But having said that, it’s a chance to show that you can put a solid packet of paperwork together for the State Attorney.”

“I wouldn’t mind giving CID a chance someday.”

“We’ll see what you think the fifth time someone from the prosecutor’s office calls asking for the report you sent them the first time they asked for it.
