âTypical men and their pride,â she said when she called back within the hour.
He asked her to explain, aka lay into the male population as a whole and in as much detail as she saw fit.
âHe didnât go into the specifics, but my guy admitted that Marin likes to rewrite history, massage the truth where necessary. A bit like with a résumé. Drop the bad jobs, emphasize the others, that sort of thing.â
âYouâre saying he didnât resign and immediately get the job working for the politician? Or resign because he got it?â
âNo.â
âYou know what he did instead?â
âThe guy I talked to wouldnât say. He already felt disloyal saying as much as he did. Looks like youâll have to spoil Marinâs day. Again.â
As soon as heâd finished on the phone he sat down at his desk with a sheet of paper and a pencil. A file on his laptop just didnât cut the mustard. Sometimes you have to go back to basics.
He jotted down what he had so far, in no particular order. It matched his thoughts and the reality of the situation perfectly.
There had been four definite members of the gang that robbed the bank:
Jez Baker, now deceased, cause unknown.
Nguyen/Tran, notable mainly for the complete lack of any information on him. Potentially still alive.
Cousin Lester, also deceased. Killed in an unsolved hit and run shortly after the heist. Supposedly worried that he was in danger before being killed.
Callahan, the getaway driver. Not a member of the activist group, VVWR. Shot dead for speaking with Evan himself in the last couple days.
In addition, there was a fifth man, Richard Keller. Shot dead in the course of the robbery by the unknown Asian man. At first thought to be an innocent bystander, now promoted to potential gang member or possibly inside man on the job. Nothing known about him other than the fact that everybody wanted things to stay that way.
Those people included:
Danny DeLuca, the man responsible for warning him off and then killing Callahan when he ignored the warning.
Kurt Hatcherâs chums. Nameless, faceless spooks who had refused to cooperate with the original investigation by:
Jorge Marin, retired detective and full-time liar.
Various other assorted pieces ofâso farâuseless information.
Jez Baker and the unknown Asian man had been in a relationship together.
The haul from the robbery had been substantially less than anticipated.
No mention made whatsoever of the stolen relic in Pentecostâs safe deposit box, the reason he was doing this in the first place.
He sat back and admired his handiwork for a couple minutes, thought about getting it framed. Thatâs all it was good for. It sure as hell didnât help move the case forward in any way. Made his head spin just looking at it.
Then again, Guillory wouldâve said that didnât take much.
