CHAPTER ELEVEN

Despite saying they had a lot to talk about, Mabel didn’t hang around for long. She gave the three of them a pep talk about getting along as team-members, reiterated that Carlton was in charge until a new agent could be assigned, and informed them they would be informed about all “pending matters” once a decision had been made.

Then she told them they needed to move.

“Now that the police have become aware of this location, I can’t have you staying here any longer. Your job tonight is to pack everything up, get it moved over to the new location, and then get some sleep.”

It was late, so the idea of packing all the safehouse gear and moving it was not appealing. Mabel gave them the address they needed to move to but didn’t stick around or offer to help.

Perks of being an officer, I guess.

“All right,” announced Carlton. “Let’s get this done.”

He was opening the door to the safe house, and Kendra and Jon were standing behind him. Neither one of them said a word. Mabel’s little speech about teamwork didn’t seem to have made much of an impact.

He went inside and began mentally organizing the task ahead of them. “All right, Jon, you can get the weapons locker. Kendra, you can grab the surveillance gear. I’ll start on the clothes and…”

Jon walked past him to the bedroom without acknowledging what he’d said. Instead of going to the weapons locker, he started pulling clothes out of the bureau and shoving them into a duffle bag. Kendra hesitated for a moment, then shrugged and did the same.

Since they’d left the police station, neither had acknowledged Carlton’s presence. They’d been respectful to Mabel’s face, but they clearly had no intention of doing what she’d asked. Still less did they intend to listen to him or reduce their hostility toward him.

I can’t be having this. If I can’t find a way to work with them, I’ll never be promoted to agent. There has to be some way for the three of us to get along.

He walked up to the bedroom and started loading his own clothes into duffle bags to be taken over to the new safehouse. Jon was working right next to him, all while acting like he wasn’t there.

If there was any time for breaking the ice, that time was now.

“That detective was really something.”

In a normal work relationship, if you opened a sentence that way, you’d expect your coworker to come back with something like, “Oh yeah? What do you mean?”

Then you’d go ahead and tell your anecdote, and you and your coworker would get a little more comfortable with each other.

Jon didn’t say anything. He must have heard what Carlton said, as Carlton was standing right next to him, but he didn’t say a word. He just went right on packing up his clothes for the move.

Carlton filled his duffle bags and took them down to the vehicle. He was both angry and confused. Why wouldn’t these two
