That December, after completing more than twenty-five missions, Jimmy was reported missing when his plane was shot down by German fighters in a raid over Verona, Italy. All members of the crew had bailed out, and all except Jimmy had been taken prisoner. Jimmy was a star in his generation, renowned for his exploits as an athlete, having been captain of the varsity football, baseball, and hockey teams in his years at St. Paul’s and Millbrook schools. The family, who knew how resourceful he was, kept hoping he might have survived and gone underground, waited an agonizing year and a half before they received the telegram from the War Department that he had been killed. They found out later that a German fighter pilot, breaking the rules of war, had shot him while he was coming down in his parachute. He had come down near a chapel on a hill overlooking the valley of the Po. For years after the war a young priest, who had found him, wrote Jimmy’s parents that he had said prayers for Jimmy.

After Russ died Peg Parsons, who had not been able to leave him for forty years, took several trips to Europe with our teenage children. Then in June 1974, with her friends Bill and Margie Platt, she drove north from Rome, on a journey she had planned for years, as recounted in a long letter to her family:
