The San Bernardino Borax Mining Company, with John Searles as its superintendent, first shipped borax from Searles Lake in 1874, hauling it 175 miles to San Pedro. On August 6, 1876, the railroad reached Mojave, shortening the haul to just 80 miles. Searles constructed roads to his mill with three overnight stations about 20 miles apart, all with water. The four large wagons he built could each haul seven and a half tons of freight. The trips to Mojave used two of these wagons in tandem, and after he changed to fuel oil for his boiler, Searles added an oil-tank wagon between them. Depending on load and road conditions, he used between 16 and 22 mules or horses to pull his wagon train. Of course, Searles often used 20 animals, mostly mules, making his the first 20-mule teams hauling borax across the California deserts, nearly nine years before the highly promoted 20-mule teams out of Death Valley.
