Clyde had taken his tandem bike, but I could still ride my own. Just as I was about to sneak out of base camp, I heard Lori’s voice from the living room window.

“Guys, what do you say we call it quits on Project Day? We’re all mostly done, right?”

A faint chorus of yeahs and I guess sos answered her; then it was quiet again.

After a minute Luna piped up. “Today was kinda wack, brah.”

That seemed to unleash a dam, and suddenly everyone chimed in at once.

“I finished my project, but it somehow doesn’t feel … complete.”

“I sort of made it work.”

“Project Day didn’t turn out quite the way I thought….”

“Has a Floater ever managed to float around to so many projects before?”

“A better question is, has a Floater ever managed to be so weird and unhelpful before?”

“Yeah, what was his deal?”

“He was being weirder than usual, that’s for sure.”

Ouch. I guess that’s what I deserved. I was being weird today. But I didn’t mean to mess up all of Project Day.

Lori clapped her hands. “Okay, we all agree today was kind of a bust. How about a special treat? Instead of ordering pizza, what if we go to Pizza Pirates for lunch?”

A ten-person cheer went up at her words, with even Lily cooing.

I felt a pang. That sounded fun … but Pizza Pirates didn’t have Marshmallow Martian Blasters and I was on a mission.

“What about Lincoln?” Leni asked.

“I saw Clyde coming over on his tandem a little while ago, and I just heard them leave. I bet they went off somewhere to talk about how weird Lincoln’s being,” said Luna.

“How that Floater sank!” Luan said. “Get it?”

I groaned. Everyone inside groaned.

“So it’s just us girls, then.” Lori clapped her hands. “Everybody in the van in five minutes!”

Pizza Pirates is right next to Gus’s Games and Grub, but if I went with my sisters and then left the pizza place to go next door, they’d know I was up to something. They’d be steamed to learn that I’d lied and deliberately messed up their projects.

I couldn’t hitch a ride. My bike would have to do.

I hurried to get it out of the garage before any of them made it out to Vanzilla. I’d have to take a different route to avoid being seen, but even so, I’d be there in no time. Marshmallow Martians, get ready to be liquefied!
