Chapter Fourteen

Hours pass without much happening. Nathaniel comes and goes, looking grim each time he shows up. He and Efram often confer together, leaving Rowan and I on our own. Rafe realizes we’re bored after a while and comes over.

"You ladies look like you need something to do."

"I want to help," I say.

I can't stand the waiting. My stomach is roiling and my heart feels like it's beating in slow motion, pressing against a heavy weight. All I can think about is how I wish time would speed up. But then again, I don't want it to go faster because I know bad things are coming. There's no escape, no relief from this sensation of building dread.

"I understand," Rafe says. "How about something to pass the time?"

"I brought some puzzles," Efram says from across the room.

"Perfect!"

Rowan and I exchange a look, and she shrugs. Anything to take my mind off what’s coming.

Rafe digs through Efram's bag and pulls out a puzzle, laying it on the table before us. It's a one-thousand piece, pretty mountain scene. Dimly I recall when I was really young seeing something similar and a wave of nostalgia passes. I'm thinking about my dad again. I couldn't have been more than two or three when we were in the mountains. He taught me a lot up there even though I was so young. I don't know very many three-year-olds who could set a trap but I could.

We dump the pieces out and start building the puzzle. Rowan and I work together and the time passes, still slow, but at least it doesn't feel like it's crawling.

Rafe and Efram are going over the maps of the transit system for the bunker. They're debating what's the best path to get us out of here. I wish I could help. I don't know anything about reading maps like that though.

"Our best bet is going to be to make a break for the main line of the subway system," Efram says, pointing at the map and tracing a line with his finger.

"But we won’t be able to use the cars, they’re too heavily guarded. We’ll have to travel on foot."

"We can try to steal a car," Efram counters.

"That could work, but-- "

They continue debating and I tune them out.

"Anybody hungry?" Efram asks and as if on cue, my stomach grumbles and I realize I am hungry.

Efram must have heard it because he smiles and goes into the small kitchenette.

I return my attention to building the puzzle. Were about halfway there and the picture is starting to come together. The closer it comes to completion, the more it brings back memories of my dad. I know he's out there somewhere. I would feel it if he was gone. I'm certain of it.

Whatever Efram's cooking smells great. The scent of it fills the room and my mouth starts to water. He carries two plates over to the table and sets them down for Rowan and me. Two burritos lie on each and I've never been so hungry.
