DEEP HOLE, BUT WHY?

“There’s a massive tunnel system down there. It looks like someone lives down there. There are rooms carved out of the wall with shelves, beds, and these strange refrigerator things. We had plenty of time to take a look,” James answered in Ian’s stead, the boy stuttering and wilting under Aiden and Anna’s combined gazes.

“Did it look like anybody had been there recently?” Anna worriedly asked. She clenched and unclenched her hand, a green luminescent energy flickering at her fingertips each time.

“Not that I could tell,” he said, putting a knuckle between his teeth as he thought. Thinking of something, he nodded and removed the knuckle. “It was pretty dark, but it didn’t seem like there was any dust on anything. The path looked like it was used often. I think we might’ve popped in when nobody was home.”

Looking down at his watch, Aiden realized it was nearly eight o’clock. The sun would be setting soon, assuming the sun was still the same.

“It’ll be dark soon,” Aiden said. “I hate to suggest it, but we still have to find the others, and it’s about to get dark…”

“It’s a hard choice to make. We don’t know if whatever’s here might be—”

A shout interrupted them. “Hey!”

Startled, they all turned around to see Cloudy, Josh, and Isaac running out of a mine shaft. Oddly, they didn’t stop or run toward the rest of them.

No, they ran toward the staircase that led back up.

“Time to go, it seems,” James said, dragging Ian toward the staircase.

A pit sank into Aiden’s stomach. He thought he might’ve had more time to prepare, but it didn’t seem like that was the case. His mind started to spiral downward, but two comforting hands touched both shoulders.

“You’re gonna be just fine,” Anna reassured him. “We’re here with you, and we’ll make sure nothing happens. Let’s go before they get too far.”

Aiden turned to Olivia, and she beamed a big smile. They both grabbed his hands and pulled him forward toward the staircase which wound all the way up.

As they crossed the massive quarry, the sun started to sink like a rock. The little light they had already became almost nothing as the moon and stars offered only tidbits here and there.

Thought I was done with shadowy shenanigans when we left the school.

That thought nearly stopped him dead in his tracks. Since he’d beat the boss, there hadn’t been a single sign of a Shadowborn anywhere. However, everything he’d experienced so far had made him believe that there would’ve been a far larger presence outside of the school.

Anna and Olivia nearly dragged him forward. Their constant tugging reminded him that they were in a bit of a hurry, so he refocused on getting out of the quarry. He ran, pumping his arms and legs as hard as he could, but he still fell behind Olivia.

She was a speed demon, cutting across the distance. Aiden stayed with Anna, who did well keeping pace, but her lack of Alacrity or Durability was noticed.
