âAre you sure Iâm the right person?â
Amanda nodded, innocence firmly displayed on her face.
âAlright,â Mrs Ferris sighed. âThough I donât understand why your teacher thought this was a good idea.â
It hadnât taken much nudging to get her teacher to agree that Mrs Ferris was the perfect example of a highly skilled worker and an ideal choice for a project on the modern workforce. Most of her class were interviewing firefighters or police officers. Amandaâs recent experience with the police had been enough for her and she didnât want to spend any more time with them. Besides, the project gave her the perfect opportunity to hang out in the office ⦠where the student records were kept.
âI wanted to do something different from the rest of my class, and the other day when I was here I thought that you seemed like you knew everything that went on at the school and thatâs so amazing when thereâs so many students.â
Amanda heard Aliceâs voice in her head telling her she was babbling. She clamped her mouth shut and smiled.
âWell, thank you, Amanda. Sometimes I think no one realises that.â Mrs Ferris was typing on the computer as she spoke. âMy job is so much more than answering phonesââ
The phone rang.
âRoseneath Primary School, Mrs Ferris speaking. Yes, thatâs fine, Mr Rogers, Iâll let her teacher know.â
She hung up the phone and scribbled something on a piece of paper.
âAnswering the phones is an important part of it too, of course, but there is so much more than that. I take care of deliveries, make payments, ensure the principal gets to her meetings on time.â
âWow, sounds busy,â Amanda said. And boring .
âIt can be quite challenging,â Mrs Ferris replied.
At that moment a boy burst into the office and excitedly announced that there was a fire in the boysâ toilets.
âRubbish!â Mrs Ferris said. âWhat have I told you about telling fibs, Selwyn Johnson?â
Nevertheless, she sprang from her desk and rushed out of the room, followed by the breathless boy.
As soon as they were gone, Amanda ran around the desk to examine Mrs Ferrisâ computer. She hoped it was as easy to operate as Mrs Ferris made it look. She wiggled the mouse and the screen came to life. It might as well have been in a different language. Scanning the office she spotted the filing cabinets and quickly opened the one marked A-H. Finding Helenâs file she scanned it as quickly as she could, knowing that the small paper fire sheâd suggested Selwyn Johnson âwould never be brave enough to startâ in the boysâ toilets wouldnât keep Mrs Ferris distracted for long.
She checked the clock above the door. Itâd been two minutes but it felt like twenty. Suddenly the sound of footsteps approached the office door. Amanda quicky closed the cabinet drawer and reached out to pick up the phone receiver, just as the office door opened and Mrs Ferris entered.
âAmanda, what are you doing?â
Amanda put the phone down. âThe phone rang and I wasnât sure what to do, so answered it.
