Chapter Twelve

Evan

I was stunned. I mean, I wanted to marry Sable and spend the rest of my life with him. That in itself was stunning and unbelievable, because I barely knew him. But I knew I belonged with him. It was a lot of biology and woo-woo to wrap my head around. Maybe fated mates did exist after all? At least mine was gorgeous and strong and clever and made me feel like—

My hopeful thoughts were shattered by the buzz of a drone swooping up the mountainside and pointing it’s intrusive camera right in our faces. I froze in horror at the sight of it. All I could think about was that the camera would see Sable’s face and everyone in the world would figure out who the anonymous alpha was.

I couldn’t do that to Sable. I couldn’t let him be dragged into the blender of public scrutiny.

“No!” I shouted, leaping up from the bench and using my body to block Sable from the drone’s blinking, nosy camera. “No! Leave us alone! Leave him alone.”

To my horror, the drone dipped and dodged to the side, as if whoever was controlling it from the ground knew exactly what it was looking at and was trying to get around me to see Sable. I threw my arms wide and dodged with it, fighting desperately to protect my alpha. I even bent quickly to pick up a rock and chucked it at the drone.

I missed, but my point must have gotten across. The drone zipped back a little. So I picked up another rock and rushed toward the railing so that I could try again to knock it out of the sky.

“Get away from us, you fuckwad! Can’t you just leave us alone?” I shouted, then chucked the stone with all my might.

I actually nicked the corner of the drone, but I didn’t do enough damage to knock it out of the sky, or disable the camera. I was encouraged, though, so I lunged for another, bigger stone to hurl.

“Evan, Evan, stop!” Sable called out, leaping after me and closing his arms around me.

It was weird how being pulled back and restrained against Sable’s chest calmed and settled me instead of making me panic more.

“It’s okay,” Sable went on. “I don’t care if they find out who I am. They’ll know that I’m with you, that it wasn’t just a one-time thing for your heat. Let them see that we’re together.”

All the air rushed out of my lungs, and I sagged back into Sable. I hadn’t thought of that. I wondered if it would make a difference if the world saw that Sable and I were a couple and that I hadn’t just hired some anonymous alpha to make a lurid sex tape.

The drone was gone, though. It had zipped back down the mountain as soon as I’d hit it, probably worried I’d do further damage. Either way, whoever controlled it already had the footage they needed. Despite my efforts, they had probably gotten a good look at Sable before I blocked him from view.
