Danny pressed his lips together. Amber had just returned from Chris’s office with a triumphant look on her face and announced that the head of the investigation would send two colleagues to Cover. Together with Laurice Beales, they were to try to locate the man.

“They’ll also check out the footage from the building’s security cameras. If Laurice and her colleagues can’t identify the man, they’ll interview the other parties in the building. Someone has to know him.”

Amber settled back in her swivel chair and pulled open the top drawer on her side of the desk. “Cookie?” She held out the package to Danny. Ginger nuts.

He loved ginger nuts.

Is this supposed to be a peace offering? Because she’s noticed that I don’t agree with her?

He took a cookie and thanked her before popping it into his mouth.

“So, until this guy is found, what do we do?” Amber put the roll of cookies on the desk.

“Besides eating cookies?” Danny couldn’t help but say.

Amber grinned at him. “Well, we can eat them while we think.”

“Possible motive? Why would a hipster guy stab homeless people?” Danny wiped a few crumbs off his T-shirt. Then he opened a file on his laptop. “We had previously considered that these might be proxy murders committed out of a dislike for homeless people in general.” He grabbed another cookie and looked at Amber.

She shrugged. “Just because the guy dresses casually doesn’t mean he’s easygoing. Maybe, despite his nonchalant attitude, homeless people are a thorn in his side.”

She is so incredibly sure that the guy she saw earlier is the guy from the video. What if that’s not the case?

“All right, go on. What other options would there be? He’s been nursing a personal grudge against Wilcox and Atkinson. That would be unlikely because, if he is a Cover employee, he wouldn’t have even seen Wilcox in a year.”

“Maybe he’s held the grudge against Wilcox for a while but only now decided to act,” Amber said, chewing.

“Okay, an extremely resentful hipster. Fine by me.”

“Concealment of another crime,” Amber continued without looking at Danny’s screen. “The hipster has committed an offense, and Wilcox and Atkinson found out and blackmailed him.”

That is indeed not bad. Maybe he embezzled funds. We still don’t know whether Wilcox and Atkinson knew each other.

“Wilcox may have overheard something at Cover a year ago that he didn’t understand but seemed strange to him. Then he met Atkinson months later, and they hit it off. At some point, he told him about the peculiar event at Cover, and Atkinson immediately came up with what might have gone on. So Atkinson went to Cover himself, got an appointment with Mr. Hipster, and blackmailed him.” Amber was in full swing.

She could work as a scriptwriter for a TV crime drama.

“But then, how did he manage to track down and kill first Wilcox then Atkinson?” Danny was more than skeptical about the scenario Amber had laid out. It just sounded too much like Hollywood.

Amber thought about it for a moment. Her hand went toward the ginger nuts, but she pulled it back before taking one.
