STRATEGY SESSION
Turns out, Jarred Bowser was a good kid. Never a high performer in school, he didn't quit on himself many times in his formative years. After he graduated, he moved from Portland and the trouble it held. Seems he ran in tough circles. In Olympia, he found a job and a new circle of friends who weren't more interested in getting high than accomplishing something with their talents. Not long after the move, he even fell in love. Though he never lived a king's life, Jarred lived.
I learned this after we left his Guardian Angel and the only world he knew, and was ever going to know. Before walking him to the Veil Gate and handing his scroll to the Scroll Eater, I opened my third eye to learn about him. I do that for all escorts who prove worth my time. Yes, in the end, it doesn't really matter. What is going to happen will happen. The end, for all things, is inevitable. Everyone and everything. So why not enjoy it while you have it to enjoy? Time. Money. Love. New experiences. Next month, next week, today, five minutes from now, it could all vanish in the next instant. For all anyone knew, they could die on the shitter the next time they took a seat.
A basic, time-tested motto: make the best of things while you can.
In the end, Jarred was a champ. I wish all jobs were as easy.
That thought rang especially true as I tapped a new scroll against my palm. I didn't want to break the seal. It's not like the Order was sending me a 'happy birthday' message. This was another job. The fun never ends.
After stepping out onto the balcony and filling my lung with fresh air, I came in and made black tea. Snagging the scroll, I took it to the reading chair, sipped the tea, and continued bouncing the new task against my knee.
At some point, I became a big boy and broke the seal. Judas Jericho signed the missive. The most obnoxious, pretentious, privileged member of the Order in the Upperworld's history.
Turns out, it wasn't another job. Yeah, for that. Maybe.
Instead of more work, the scroll called me to a meeting in three hours. An encouraging sign, almost every single way I looked at it.
If the Order wanted to meet with the Reaper Minister, that meant this business had to do with me and/or the Reapers. Raphael was detailed to the Reapers, but maybe more were on their way. Reinforcements, finally? Was I going to receive the angel power I'd been asking from them for the better part of four centuries? Maybe they were calling to notify me of my reassignment to another division. Personally, I'd gladly take up a position in Pher's Level as the guy who rents out umbrellas to beachgoers and then spend my eternity soaking in the rays and view of bikini-clad angels. I can think of worse ways to spend the days I had left.
