Of course—except in the plantation South—inequities of wealth were bound to be greater in the cities than in the countryside, where there were fewer wealthy people. Nonetheless, the rich in America generally were getting richer. But so were most people: American prosperity was rising rapidly and everybody was getting a larger slice of the pie; it was just that the wealthy people were moving ahead faster.

The industrial revolution in America took place over a long period and was not really complete until after 1900, when more workers were in mills and factories than were on farms. Slow as the change came, it was nonetheless revolutionary, for it brought with it a new class system. All societies are divided into classes, in some cases fairly loose ones, as in America today. In other cases they are clearly marked, as in medieval Europe, where with a very few exceptions a peasant was a peasant for life, as would be his children and grandchildren.
