* * * *

Edward hurried to his car, both happy and in complete shock from the discussion that had ensued after Phil and Kaleb had boomed out of the principal’s office with Jonathan in tow.

He turned the corner and almost stopped short as he saw a police car parked at the student’s parking lot, talking to some guy his own age. He walked that way just to eavesdrop and picked up that the man was there to pick up his son who then ran off with some friends, and one of these friends had punched the man.

“It was that Watcher kid!” the man yelled. Edward regretted walking that way and hurried toward his car. “Hey, it’s his damn kids!”

“Sir, stop!” an officer yelled, and Edward did. He waited for the officer to catch up to him and used the time to scream out an SOS to the whole pack.

“Is this true?”

“I only know of an altercation were my youngest son was attacked. I’m on my way home to check on him now.”

“So you don’t know of this?”

“No. You can follow me home and we’ll find out what happened, but that man is not welcome in my house or even near it!” Edward sneered.

“Easy now, sir, as things look right now he is the victim of your son’s—”

“My son is pushy, and sometimes even a hothead, but he never hits someone unless he aims to incapacitate a threat. Never!”

The cop looked skeptical, and Edward hadn’t expected him not to.

“I’m a dad, too, I understand why you defend him.”

“Then follow me, but he does not!” Edward nodded toward Jonathan’s dad. “If I understood this situation correctly, you’ll be arresting him later.”

“Serious allegation—”

“I’m not accusing him of anything. I’m just saying that both you and I need more facts before we take any actions. Please,” Edward said, pointing to his car. The officer thought for a second or two, then nodded.

“Wait here,” he said and went back to his partner. The man who... Phil, he guessed, had punched was still angry and yelling and he suddenly walked Edward’s way.

“Stay there!” Edward yelled and the cop who had talked with Edward ran after and stopped the man from coming any closer to Edward.

“Leave your name, address, and number with us and we’ll go talk to the kid—”

“Arrest him! He’s an adult, anyway! He’s made so much trouble he had to repeat a few years!”

“That’s enough, go see a doctor if you think it necessary, and wait for us to come by later.”

“You guys aren’t gonna do shit about this, are you?”

“Fine, we can take you to the station and—”

“No, no, you’re not taking me anywhere! I’m the victim here. Take him!” the man said and pointed at Edward, but then hopped into his car and drove away. The cops talked quietly for a minute and then the one Edward had talked with came his way.

“I’ll ride with you,” he said.

“I’m Edward Watcher.”

“My name is Davis.”

They got into Edward’s car and drove in silence. The cop sent him sidelong glances, but stayed quiet, and Edward was happy he did.
