The phone rang again. I growled at the instrument, flabbergasted that the man was calling back. It wasn’t Braydon Sharp’s name on the screen, though. It read Aiden Maddox.

“Have you seen Blue?” I blurted, forgoing Hello or anything else. “My purse was stolen. He was in it. I got my purse back, but the dragon is missing.”

“I haven’t seen him,” Maddox said slowly, as if his mind was still turning, trying to remember if he had seen Blue and forgotten about it. “Where are you?”

“At my apartment.”

Maddox disconnected the call without another word. Ten minutes later, the buzzer for the street door sounded. I opened the app on my phone that let me see who was there. After the goons had grabbed me, The Gate had put in a camera over the front door and given all the tenants access to the app.

Maddox stood outside. He wore blue jeans and a gray and white striped t-shirt, and carried a small suitcase. Another man walked up next to him.

Braydon Sharp. Dressed in a well-cut, navy three-piece suit and his gray fedora.

I watched as the two men exchanged a few words and then shook hands. Moths fluttered in my chest while I tried to decide what to do.

Maddox raised his arm and pressed my buzzer again. I grabbed my keys and went down the stairs. I stood a moment wondering if this was a good idea and decided it was better than buzzing them in and having both in my apartment. I opened the street door and stepped out.

“Gentlemen,” I said.

“Nic,” Maddox said.

Braydon Sharp doffed his fedora. “I couldn’t let you turn down my offer of help in finding your dragon. Shall we go upstairs?”

All my muscles tensed. Sharp was beginning to feel like a stalker. As for him coming upstairs, that wasn’t going to happen.

“I was just on my way out,” I said. “To the market.”

Sharp’s smile held no humor. “Without your purse?”

“Credit card in my pocket,” I said. “If you have news about Blue... about the dragon, I’d love to hear it.”

Sharp surveyed me a long moment before he spoke. “I may know who has taken him.”

“Because it was you?” I asked.

Sharp laughed without humor. “Not me, as I told you before.”

It annoyed me to admit it, but I believed him.

“Where is the dragon now?” I asked.

“I don’t know exactly where, and the who is a bit murky as well. My sources tell me that something called The Whispers has taken your dragon.”

My heart froze. I’d suspected The Whispers had found me again. Braydon Sharp confirmed it. And they had Blue, if Sharp was correct.

“Do you know where these Whisperers are holding him?” I asked.

“The Whispers,” Sharp corrected my intentional misnaming of the secret society. “No. I don’t. Not exactly. My understanding is they are holding him in Redondo Beach. We could go look.”

Maddox, who’d been quietly listening to my exchange with Sharp, spoke up. “Redondo is a big town. Do you have any more specific information?”

Sharp looked at Maddox as if a mangy dog with muddy paws had suddenly run in and jumped up on him.
