Chapter 10

Anders

I slowly emerged from my natural slumber. After so many years in semi-stasis, it felt both odd and wonderful, especially because of the beauty in my arms. Sleep had never been so amazing, surrounded and infused by the gorgeous aura of my mate. My eyelids fluttered open, surprised at first by the dim light inside the room. I realized then that the large TV screen seamlessly embedded in the wall, displayed a fake window with the shades drawn, but with light seeping in from the sides.

The clever technology acted as a daylight lamp to simulate natural sunlight. A number of bases built in environments hostile to settlers used similar systems to reduce the negative effects of living in a form of confinement. As a Lyrian, my glowing eyes allowed me to see clearly even in a pitch-black environment. But in my current human form, I would have been blind without this fake daylight.

I seized the opportunity to admire my woman. Kathleen moved a lot in her sleep. She also muttered unintelligible gibberish between two snores. Right now, she had partially climbed on top of me, with one leg over mine, her arm around my chest, and her head on my shoulder. However, it would soon be time for her to go to work. With much reluctance, I carefully extricated myself from my woman and got out of bed. Worf had curled up in a ball at the foot of the bed during the night. It had no doubt been to avoid getting squished with all of Kathleen’s tossing and turning. He perked up and made a discreet hoot, not to wake her.

Although limited, the intelligence of the little Fudian impressed me. But above all, his unconditional love for my mate moved me. And what a big heart in such a little body. I didn’t doubt for a second that Worf would gladly give his life to protect Kathleen if needed. That he had so openly welcomed me into their inner circle touched me beyond words. I extended a hand towards Worf. He jumped on top of it then climbed his way to my shoulder before hugging my neck. The little rascal, too, was stealing a piece of my heart.

Careful not to wake Kathleen, I exited the bedroom and closed the door behind me. After settling Worf on
