Chapter Thirteen

Marrok took Tilde to Maxime and intended to leave her with him. Exhaustion coursed through his body, and he gave more than one thought to crawling into that pathetic twin bed with Amy. However, the Alpha called the Pack together, minus Blanche, who dozed against Amy’s door. Thankfully, Vivette was able to supply Tilde some clothes, as they were nearly the same size. She stood in the Alpha’s den, fire blazing in the fireplace, with her arms behind her back, eyes straight forward. A soldier awaiting new orders.

“And you ... just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” Maxime said. A statement, not a question.

“Oui. As I told your Beta, I needed a new hunting ground.”

“How long have you been alone?”

She flinched a brief second, as though the thought of being alone physically hurt her. “Far too long,” she answered softly. “But not long enough to turn feral.”

“Obviously,” Luna grumbled. She always reacted poorly to being woken up, even for Pack issues.

The Alpha scrutinized Tilde, from her black hair cut into a ragged bob to her hard-set jaw to her thick thighs. “You look healthy.”

“I’ve done well for myself.”

“How do I know that Francesca Lapan didn’t send you?”

For the first time, her gaze went to Maxime. “Because I want to kill her.” The stench of her anger filled the room.

“Why?”

“Her Pack attacked mine.” Either she was a hell of an actress, or she was telling the truth. “The Bay Pack wiped mine out completely, except for me. She’s making a territory grab through the province. Slaughtered us like nothing.”

Three Mile? Marrok wondered. The timing made sense.

“If,” the Alpha said to Tilde, “I find out that you’re part of the Bay Pack, or you betray us, your life is forfeit.”

“I understand.”

And she sounded like she did.

The Alpha stepped back. “Then welcome to the Windsor Pack.”

A chorus of howls went up in the room, except for Marrok’s and Luna’s, who shot him a look and shook her head.

For now, Tilde would room with Vivette until her place in the Pack was determined. Tilde glared at Marrok on her way out, and immediately, he knew he’d been duped. She wasn’t necessarily a spy sent by their mother, but she was trouble. If she thought she could take his place as Beta in the middle of two conflicts, she was sorely mistaken, and if he needed to remind her of that, so be it.

Marrok waited to leave until the others had filed out, but his brother’s voice stopped him. “What do you think, Rok? Did I make the right choice?”

How long had it been since Maxime wanted his opinion? “Now you ask?”

“I ... sense something in her. And I don’t know what it is.”

It’s ambition. The same thing that plagues you. “I don’t know, Max. I trust your judgment, but I don’t trust her.”

Maxime nodded. “I don’t want her on her own. One of the others needs to be with her at all times.”

Ah, the first logical thing his brother had said in weeks.
