Thirty One

BigMother appeared in orbit, right over the main city.

A screen popped up, showing me the city center. Most of it was rubble. Fires raged in some places. It zoomed in to one edge of the destroyed area, where a group with guns were firing them to keep what looked like firefighters back.

Five Gatekeepers appeared. Jack O’Neill popped up on my console.

“What have we got, boss?”

“Looks like armed people stopping firefighters and relief workers from getting into the destroyed zone.”

“Orders?”

“Get them in. Preferably by stunning anyone trying to stop them, but if that doesn’t work, do what’s needed. Better put a ring of marines around the area in case others turn up to stop rescue attempts. Beyond that, combat suits to try and save people. The Alpha Team will be going in to the worst hit areas using special equipment.”

“On it, boss.”

He started giving orders to four marine battalions, and his headquarters unit. Where Jane had the ground zoomed in, marines appeared, there was a short firefight, and the firefighters moved in. One in three combat suits went with them.

A shape appeared almost on top of me, and both Angel and I flinched. Jane of course, just grinned. The navmap said it was Custer, and someone had jumped it in only meters from the docking clamps.

“George!” I yelled.

“How did you know it was me?” he said, as Custer completed docking.

“Who else would do a crazy stunt like that?”

“Grace would. And Miriam. And …”

“Okay. Who’s with you?”

“No-one. They’re all down in BigMother storage getting the giant suits out.”

“So how the hell do they get them on board Custer, if you’re docked to deck zero?”

“Oops.”

Custer undocked again, and vanished to appear meters off the nose of BigMother this time. A few seconds later, and the ship was docked again. Jane put up a screen showing the cargo deck, where eight giant suits were running towards the airlock. Behind them, moving slowly to stay behind them, was the mole. Apparently Miriam was piloting the mole.

Annabelle dropped into the XOs seat next to me.

“Eight suits?” I asked her.

One of them had to be on AI control.

“You don’t think George is going to let them have all the fun, do you?”

“I guess not.”

I turned to Jane.

“Do we have any contact with the planetary government?”

“Not yet. Certainly not here. The governmental offices are in the middle of that mess down there. I’m trying other cities.” There was a pause. “Got someone.”

A screen popped up with what looked like a deer, complete with small antlers. He looked surprised for a moment to find me in civvies, but seemed to recognize Annabelle.

“General, I’m glad you’re here. About an hour ago, insurrectionists detonated enough bombs to flatten the center of our capital city. The Moot was in session, so I’m afraid I’m possibly the only member of the planetary government left.”

He turned to one side, and coughed in a major way, which seemed to indicate why he wasn’t working that day.

“I formally request the help of the Imperium for rescue operations, and putting down the insurrection.
