Chapter Six

Despite more back and forth in her own mind, Callie returned to her row house alone. She was tempted to ask Adam to stay, except the past few hours had been too traumatic. She needed time on her own and to rest. She was beyond exhausted so in spite of being super worked up, she slept and slept hard.

A light, steady spring rain fell outside. It cast a chill on the day. Where the night had been sweet and romantic and a little too warm for the season, the rain brought fireplace weather. She cuddled on the couch with the laptop and surfed the messages from the dating website. She didn’t know why. After last night, she had no intention of seeing any more biker idiots like that.

Her hand hesitated on the scroll down when she saw another message from Gentle Warrior.

Looking for a little sunshine on a rainy day, he wrote.

Callie could not help but release an “awwww.” She felt guilty even being on the site, but Gentle Warrior seemed to be that little ray of sunshine… on a rainy day.

It seemed every time she went online, her mailbox was inundated with a ton of notes from guys wanting to make a connection. She wanted to date one man. Not a club. She stared at Gentle Warriors’ message. It was the second really good note he had sent her, so she felt like she should write back. Snuggling with the fireplace going. Wonderful Sunday, she wrote.

Sounds wonderful, he wrote back. Enjoy.

And just like that he was gone. Just a few romantic words suspended in unreality. She might as well be watching a movie. There was no real life going on for Callie despite her best efforts. Even online, she managed to attract a man who did drive-bys. He would land, romance her and then become unavailable. It made Callie frustrated and sad again.

With impeccable timing, Lauren texted her: Hey! Wanna go to the Harbor?

Kinda rainy, Callie sent back.

We have an invite to dinner. Elwyn and Joe.

Callie snorted. Elwyn? The Wizard? No freaking thanks.

Her phone buzzed a moment later with Lauren’s reply. Hey, let the guy make it up to you. He had a little too much to drink and he was nervous.

I’m surprised he is still talking to me after I ditched him last night, texted Callie.

Lol. He seems to think he ditched you. He said you were right to not want to drink. He wants to make it up.

But in true Lauren fashion, she rang before Callie could reply. “Before you say no, it’s a free dinner. The Chart House,” said Lauren. “Early bird. So you’ll be back in your cozy abode.”

“Sure,” said Callie easily.

“Sure?” said Lauren. “I don’t have to manipulate?”

“Nah,” said Callie. She couldn’t believe she was agreeing to this. She had given Elwyn a hard time last night. Maybe he deserved a fair chance. “I could go for a nice normal dinner with a guy who actually wants to see me.”

“What happened between today and yesterday that I don’t know about?” asked Lauren.
