Trying to understand the demand in a market is just as important as evaluating the supply (existing competitor listings). Demand can be estimated at several stages. First, using tools (Chapter 7), it is possible to extract data (timing of sales, prices, total revenue). Upfront analysis can be an effective way to compare markets on a relative basis. Another way to assess demand is the selling of your sample order. However, some creative sellers (Will Tjernland in this case) are taking steps to further evaluate demand in between these two stages by selling a few units they have not bothered to actually hold. Once the units sell, they fulfill the order from another listing or buy the unit from a wholesaler and have it shipped directly to their address. Using this technique, units are sold at a slight overall loss, but this slight loss is considered an investment in information in the market (and much cheaper than making a full order).
