Thirteen

I sat in the living room of the old farmhouse in an overstuffed wingback chair, gazing out the large bay window at the golden sunset spreading across the sky like spilled paint. It was as picturesque as could be. My jeep and Chance’s truck were side by side in the drive, a green lawn, mounds of flowers, and white picket fence separating them from the house. In the distance I could see the small compound of buildings that made up the pack offices, their windows reflecting the gold of the sunset back at me. In the kitchen to my right I could hear the adorable grumbles of Chance as he wandered groggily about, attempting to fix himself a cup of coffee. He’d gotten a small nap, but it clearly hadn’t been enough.

“Do ya need help in there?” I called.

There was another grumble in response that I interpreted as a no. He seemed the type to be overly independent, so I let it go. Alpha genetics be like that. Instead, I went back to staring at the new phone we’d stopped and picked up at a local big box store. It wasn’t the best thing ever made, but I could download all the apps I needed and program in a few numbers. Thankfully I still had my mother’s phone number memorized. I called her on the drive over, much against my better judgment, and told her the same lie I’d told Chance about losing my phone in the water. She gave me a long speech about being responsible, this coming from the woman who had put her phone through the washing machine three times in the past year, which I reminded her of. However, I made it a point not to mention the problems the Tellurian pack was having. As much as she drove me crazy, I didn’t want to give her undue cause to worry. She had enough on her plate already and the Tellurian pack was big and they had plenty of security. It would only needlessly worry her. Besides, they’d probably have it cleared up in a few days. With their own under threat, the entire pack would be on the hunt for whatever it was that had attacked them. I had nothing to worry about, not that it stopped me from being afraid of outside now that everyone was on lockdown.

With the call to my mother out of the way, I exchanged my new number with Leo and decided I didn’t need anyone else in my phone. Chance was in there of course, but there was nobody else in my old contact list that I actually spoke to. Years of collecting so-called friends turned out to be a big pile of nothing. And, it was with no small amount of joy, that I realized Jeremy could no longer contact me with his stupid passive aggressive messages. He knew damn well I was gone, but still he haunted me, knowing it would drive me mad. However, with one simple flick of the wrist, he was out of my life forever.
