Two days after her fight with Nikolaj, Alex had yet to return, and Chloe had no word about her unconscious brother. She felt like she was losing her mind.

At the knock on the door, she commanded, “Enter.”

Speak of the Devil—well, at least one of them.

“Good morning.” Sauntering in, Chloe threw herself onto the end of the bed, barely missing Nika’s tucked-up feet. “How’s the side?”

Shifting, Nika pulled herself straighter in bed. “It’s healing slower than usual, but the prodders say I should be fine in a few days.”

Laughing, Chloe twisted to face her. “Calling the doctors mean names won’t endear them to you, you know.”

“I don’t need them endeared to me. I just need them to stop poking at me.”

“If you would stop getting injured, then maybe they wouldn’t have to.”

“It’s not like I volunteered for this,” Nika grumbled.

“Ahh, yeah, you did.” The smile on Chloe’s face died at her next words. Taking a deep breath, she said, “He’s awake.”

Speechless, Nika climbed out of bed and made her way to the closet.

“You can’t see him yet,” Chloe said casually.

“Like the hellish plane I can’t.”

“My Queen…” Climbing off the bed, she followed Nika. “You can’t see him until you’re fully healed. You can’t afford to show any weakness. Plus, we need Alex back to interrogate him. I know you think you should be the one to deal with him, but Alex will have a more objective outlook. He also has more experience.”

Nika hunched her shoulders and sighed. Moving back to the bed, she gingerly lowered herself. The waiting game they played was taking its toll on her.

“Where on the hellish plane is Alex? It shouldn’t take this long to find Demyan. I hope the Totems haven’t done anything stupid.”

Chloe was about to respond when a knock sounded, interrupting her.

“Come in,” Nika snapped out.

The door pushed open, and Alex walked in.

“Where the hell have you… eww, you stink.” Chloe pinched her nose in defense.

“That’s what happens when you don’t shower for two days.”

“What happened, and where’s Demyan?” Nika asked, ignoring their banter.

Alex collapsed into the nearest chair and rested his face in his hands.

Something was wrong. Nika could feel it in every fiber of her Immortal body. She had sensed it the moment he didn’t return the night of the fight. But she had told herself she was being paranoid, that both of them would return, and then she could move forward with mending the rift between the Totems and the Immortals.

Alex sat, eyes searching the floor, barely awake and keeping himself together by a thread.

“Look at me!” Nika demanded. “What happened?”

Scrubbing his hands over his face, he studied her.

“When we got there, Jason said that Demyan was being held in the dungeon. He led us down to retrieve him, but his cell was empty.” Taking a shaky breath, he went on, “We searched every other cell and as much of their lands as we could in the last forty-eight hours. Jason even had a team of men help, but we found nothing.
