Present

“I’m going for an hour,” Bane told me as I sat on his bed, eyes dulled in boredom. “You are not to leave this room, understand?”

I tipped my head up, smirking. “Make me.”

He only smiled. “Oh, I already have.”

He then waved outside the room, eyes glowing in amusement as a man with dark black hair and brown eyes stepped out from the hall, and his eyes locked on me, looking emotionless.

“This is Vernon,” Alpha Bane said, eyes glowing. “His job is to stand by this door and make sure you don’t leave.”

I watched Vernon for a moment, heart thudding against my chest when I noticed the cold touch to his eyes.

I gazed back at Bane, feeling weirdly uneasy. “Why can’t Brandon, Loki, or Hunter watch me. Or Amber?”

Bane just shook his head as if he was disappointed in me. “Brandon, Hunter, and Loki have to come with me. And Amber is doing something today. My only option is Vernon.”

I gazed over at the werewolf next to him, and he just smiled, tipping his head to the side curiously.

But his eyes were dark.

I gazed back over at Bane, thinking to him, I don’t like him.

“Tough it up,” he replied aloud. “You can’t always get what you want.”

“But, I—”

He then waved at me. “Goodbye.”

And I watched him leave the room in silence.

I then glanced over at Vernon who had his brows raised, watching Bane quietly leave the hallway.

He then gazed back at me. “So... how are you?”

I blinked at his attempt in conversation, then shook my head. “Fine, you?”

He smiled. “A little stressed.”

I rolled my eyes. “Tell me about it.”

He was silent for a moment. “Want me to tell you why I’m stressed?”

I gazed over at him in suspicion. “Sure.”

He just watched me, a little light leaving his eyes. “Do you know... Willow?”

I sighed then, rolling my eyes. “Bane’s ex? Yep.”

“She was angry this morning,” Vernon stated, and I gazed up, watching him carefully. “She was mad about... you.”

I sat fully then, watching him as he stared at me.

“She’s like my little sister—my best friend,” he explained, something odd catching in his tone. “She wanted Bane to love her for who she was, and he denied her that.”

“So?” I countered.

His eyes grew dark. “You denied her that.”

My stomach sank in my chest.

I didn’t like the hint catching in his tone. “I didn’t take him from her.”

“Didn’t you?” Vernon countered, stepping in the room. “What did you do to Bane? Threaten him? Hurt him? Force him to be yours?”

I shook my head frantically. “No! He’s the one who forced me!”

Vernon growled under his breath. “Don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not lying!” I explained frantically, scooting back on the bed as he advanced toward me.

His eyes grew cold, and mine rounded.

“I guess I’ll get the truth out of you,” he explained as I skittered away from him. “And then I’ll make you never want to come back again.”

Before I could get up, he slammed the door closed behind him. “Let’s get started, shall we?”

I gazed up in a panic, crying out when he came at me.
