Chapter Nineteen

Knowing the bar was dog friendly, I raced upstairs and grabbed Peaches, hoping that if Wade was a dog lover, she might provide a good icebreaker to get him talking. After I got her safely secured, we sped north down Main Street and headed for the town line.

Just as I approached the Hoochville side of the river, I could see Lauralee’s Zesty Yellow Mini Cooper convertible nearing the other end of the bridge, followed closely by Misty Dawn’s 1985 Oxford White Mercury Capri, complete with the distinctive bubble hatch. It had been her first car, and she was devastated when she had to sell it to cover her nursing school tuition after her parents divorced. She never tired of reminiscing about the memories we’d made in that car in high school, and she’d also never stopped mourning the day she had to give it up to a total stranger. So seven years ago while she was pregnant with Riya, Raj found the VIN on some old paperwork she’d kept. He tracked down the car, bought it back, and secretly had it fully restored to its original glory. On the day Riya was born and Misty Dawn handed him his first child, he handed her the keys to her first ‘baby’ in return. It was still hands-down the most romantic gesture I’d ever witnessed.

I sped to catch up with them, and we all three pulled into the parking lot at the same time. I hadn’t needed a vehicle in New York City, but now maybe it was time for me to upgrade or just outright purchase something that would add a little more pizzazz to my life. Maybe a Corvette or some other kind of sportscar. Alex had always been fond of the 1955 Chevy Bel Air, so maybe I’d consider more classic options.

When a sharp rap came at my window, I jumped and was startled from my automobile-buying fantasy. I looked up to see my three besties standing right next to my door, staring back at me, no doubt wondering if I was ever going to drag myself from the car. When I stepped out, Deana Marie was so antsy she was practically dancing.

“Hurry up, Sadie. Wade’s already finished his sixth beer and was calling for round seven when I came outside to wait on you guys,” she said impatiently. “If he drinks much more, he won’t be capable of coherent thought, much less carrying on a conversation.”

“Okay, okay. Just let me grab Peaches and I’m ready,” I said, hurrying around to the opposite side of the car to retrieve my pup from her carrier. By the time I had clipped her leash
