Chapter Eleven
IT WAS A BUSY day. Not only because the bakery had been unexpectedly closed during the search for and discovery of William Andrews, but also because it was Erin’s first day training a new employee.
Bella Prost was a seventeen-year-old who was only carrying a half-load for her last year of school, so she had enough time on her hands to take up a part-time job, and she was interested in becoming a baker or a cook. There hadn’t been hundreds of applications to go through, but a fair number of the high-school and graduated-but-not-yet-employed students had been interested in the position. Erin hoped that Bella would work out. She seemed like a nice girl and Erin thought that her sunny personality would be a good complement to hers and Vic’s. Bella was slightly overweight, with a head full of blond curls that bounced around her face.
“What do you want me to do first?” she asked Erin. She looked around the kitchen, where Vic and Erin had already been busy for a few hours. “I can sweep up or wash dishes if you want.”
“No, let’s get you out front to start with,” Erin told her. “Throw on an apron and a cap, and I’ll get you oriented there.”
“Okay.” Bella beamed. “Wherever you want me.” She obediently dressed herself, and joined Erin at the front of the shop.
Erin ran through the day’s goodies in the display case. “Now, our customers are all repeat buyers, so they’ll probably know more about the products than you will to begin with. You’ll get to know what their special dietary needs are, so that you can point them in the right direction when we have something new on offer. This is our Bible.” She pulled out a three-inch black binder from under the cash register. It was filled with recipes in plastic sleeves. “These are all of the ingredients for all of the products. If someone asks you what is in a muffin or a cookie, they are just in alphabetical order, so you can check the list.” Erin opened it to chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. “As well as a list of ingredients, there is a key beside each recipe. Gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, vegan, nut-free, and so on. Everything is gluten-free and nut-free. But not everything is vegan. There are a lot of eggs and dairy in some of the recipes.”
Bella nodded attentively.
“And in the second section,” Erin turned the pages over to the last one-third of the plastic page protectors. “These are the labels for the different products we use. So if someone wants to check the ingredients for the chocolate chips, or to see where the rice flour comes from, or whatever, you shouldn’t have to run back to the kitchen to check packages.”
“That’s smart.”
“Saves a lot of time. You never know what questions people are going to ask, but you should be able to answer most of them with the Bible. Of course, Vic or I will always be here with you and can answer a lot of the questions from memory, but the book is here for you when you need it.
