Chapter Fourteen

So…yes. Jac had just tried to kiss his boss, his employer, the person who was paying for this trip, though he was trying to figure out how to pay her back. Oh, and he wasn’t even sure he had a job after this because he hadn’t gotten around to asking if she meant to keep the farm. Yeah, that was him, thinking kissing thoughts. In her bed. Right after he’d had a facial.

Forpulet! (In degrees, forpulet is one of the worst versions of goddamnit in Danish.)

And now her best friends were here, in Seoul, probably knowing what a moron he was and here to save Rose from what was on his mind. And his stupid, stupid brain kept replaying how she’d held him, like she couldn’t get enough, as well as placing one of his already warm hands between her thighs. The warmth, the softness there—well, he’d never forget that.

He thought about racing to his room when he’d heard the feminine, and English-speaking “Surprise!” But with the hotel layout, they’d see him make the dash. He decided it would be best to throw away all the remnants of the facial and stand as close to the living area as possible, pretending he hadn’t just rumpled Rose’s bedding. But then he saw how rumpled the linens were and tried to straighten them, overhearing Rose say, “What are you doing here?”

Two women’s voices answered at once, so he had no clue what they were saying, but now he was stuck in Rose’s bedroom area as the voices trapped him there because they kept getting closer. He scampered to the other side of the bed, accidentally running into the thing and undoing all the work he’d just done, and stood by the window, pretending he was just looking out at the majestically sparkling city. Yes, that’s all he was doing.

He was sweating, panting, blushing, and now the bed looked definitely rumpled when Rose’s best friends came into view.

“Oh, hello!” he blurted. “So nice to see you here!” He was far too loud. Forbasket.

Charli smiled but was surreptitiously glancing at the crumpled duvet. Laney was openly staring at the bed, her blue eyes huge once they latched onto him and accused him of all sorts of crimes.

“Jac,” Charli said. “Come here, you! I have missed you!”

He had gotten to the point of hugging Rose’s friends, especially in the last year, but he was fairly certain if he touched Charli, she’d be able to read his mind, knowing how close he’d been to trying to kiss her friend. Still, he jerkily moved forward and hugged her, giving her quick kisses on her cheeks—her husband was French and she’d started to embrace him the French way last year. He gave Laney a hug too, but she was still staring at him like he was trying to steal all of Rose’s jewelry.

Interesting, that. Rose didn’t wear jewelry, except sometimes, she wore her medicine bundle—a small, dark leather beaded bag with items sacred to her inside on a finely purple beaded band—when she was feeling sad.
