CHAPTER SIX

On arriving at the harbor, she saw that the boats were all docked for the evening, and there was little activity. As she walked along the harbor, she did her best not to think about Grace, Andy, and Katy.

As if fate was trying to play games with her, she looked up, and in front of her was a familiar-looking blond woman standing by the harbor. She had a man with her, whom Holly also thought she recognized.

They were standing close to one another, their arms just about touching. Katy turned and saw her. She must have said something because then Simon turned to look in her direction. He raised a hand in greeting, and Katy did the same as they began walking over to her.

“Katy,” Holly said when they drew near, “how are you holding up?”

“I’m okay. You know, getting by. That’s about all I can hope for now, I guess.” She looked tired.

“Again, I’m so sorry,” Holly said.

“Thank you,” Katy replied with a tired smile.

“Is there anything I can do for you?” Holly asked, ignoring the smile.

“No, no, not really. But thank you for asking all the same. Oh, and thank you for the lasagna the other night. That was a huge help for me. I appreciate it.”

“You’re welcome.”

“I suppose I’d better get that tray back to you at some point.”

“Oh, there’s no rush. Whenever you feel up to it, I can come to your place and collect it.”

Katy turned to look at Simon then. She seemed uncertain, but then she turned back to Holly.

“No, it’s fine. I need to... I guess to try and get back into the swing of things. Perhaps it will do me good to come to the cafe.”

“Oh! I know this might not be the time for this, but while I’ve got you here, here’s the money I’d come to drop off the other day when... well, you know.”

She reached into her pocket and pulled out the envelope.

“Here you go,” she said as she handed it over.

"Thank you," Katy replied, slipping the envelope into her pocket.

Holly looked at her as she searched for words, trying to think of what she could say next. The words eluded her.

“Simon has been a great help,” Katy said.

“Of course. We met the other day. He’s your sister’s husband, right?”

“Yes, that’s right.”

“It must be comforting to have them here to help you.”

“Oh, it is. Except, it’s just Simon. My sister couldn’t make it. She couldn’t get the time off work.”

“Oh? That is a shame. They couldn’t give her the time off even for something like this?”

“She does have a very high-powered job. She’ll make it for the funeral, though.”

“Is there any news on when the funeral will be?”

“No, not yet. We’re still waiting for the police to release the body. Then we can start making plans. They told us it should be soon, but it doesn’t seem worthwhile planning things like that until we’ve got him back and we know what we can do.”

“Of course. That makes sense.”

“Have
