Chapter Nineteen: Kostas Vasileiou

I had to get out of there.

If I stayed any longer I was going to crawl into bed next to her and hold her until she fell asleep. And then I would catch her sickness, not to mention blur the boundaries between us until everything is a hazy mess.

“Good morning, Your Highness.” Bartleby nearly startles me out of my skin as I walk toward the servants’ entrance of the kitchen. “Can I assist you with anything?”

“I’m making my fiancée a cup of tea. She’s feeling under the weather, I’m afraid.” I clear my throat, trying to pull myself together.

“I’m sorry to hear that, Your Highness.” He opens the kitchen door for me and clears out a space on the kitchen work table for me to use. “Here are all the teas. Might I recommend this one, Your Highness? It’s supposed to have healing properties and is good for sleep.”

I pick out the tea he suggests, a chamomile tea with lemon and ginger, and while I wait for the water to boil, other servants bustle in and out of the kitchen. In another life, I could easily have been one of them.

How different would my life be if I was? I wouldn’t know Raina, for one thing. And I can’t decide if that’s a disappointment or a boon. In the time I’ve gotten to know her, all I know is that I want to have more of her in my life—minus her guinea pig running up my pant leg. She’s a wildfire I don’t want to put out.

The whistle of the tea kettle startles me and I nearly spill hot water onto the table as I pour it into the teapot. Setting the pot, a cup and saucer, and a few snacks onto the tea tray, I bring them towards my room.

Halfway up the staircase that divides the servants’ quarters from the rest of the palace, Bartleby appears again. I almost jump and drop the tray at his sudden appearance. The butler’s footsteps are nearly silent. When we were children, Andreas once made me believe that Bartleby was actually a ghost. I actually bought it for a good two weeks until my uncle asked me why I hid behind him every time I saw Bartleby coming down the hall.

“Apologies for startling you, Your Highness, but there is an emergency family meeting in half an hour in the library,” Bartleby says.

“Tell them I won’t be attending.” I have no doubt that his meeting is going to be about Andreas’ impromptu announcement about his dating life last night. Since I’ve yet to fully process or collect my thoughts about it, being so jet lagged that I fell into bed and immediately dozed off at eight p.m. last night, I’m in no mood to discuss it now with the family.

Bartleby clears his throat, his expression still emotionless and his pale blue eyes betraying no disappointment or annoyance. “Your uncle insists that you be there.”

Normally, I would agree to go just for that guilt trip.
