“I always find it extremely strange to visit this land. Bennus are an Egyptian myth but it’s not like we’re actually Egyptian. This land wasn’t even called Egypt when I came into being. Actually, I think it was still underwater back then. When we were created by the Great Mother’s imagination, all the world was simply one big place.”

Despite mild aggravation to have her solitude interrupted, Elenora turned to face one of her oldest and dearest friends. She couldn’t be rude to a being that had served as her witch familiar, her trainer, and her confidante. No, not even on her worst day would she treat him to the rudeness she felt for most.

“Greetings, Great Emeritus.”

“Greetings, Elenora.”

She smiled and tilted her head. “If Bennus are not Egyptian, then why do all of you wear the headdress of the Pharaohs? Even Zenos wears one and I know he doesn’t align with any Earthly religion.”

There was a small stone ledge on the back neck of the Sphinx just big enough for humans to sit on. She’d discovered the ledge during her first visit to the historical monument as well as a secret entrance to the Sphinx’s hidden chambers half-way down the statue’s stone spine. If she had it to do over again, she never would have told anyone. Now she couldn’t come here and be alone. Hindsight was always twenty-twenty.

Elenora had to wait for her Bennu friend’s answer to her taunt. First, Emeritus searched and found a comfortable spot to sit, and apparently, it had to have the perfect place for him to lean back before he spoke.

“Oh, we didn’t always wear a crown as part of our Bennu form. We started wearing it after the Pharaohs rose to power. The Egyptians were the first humans who considered Bennus to be gods. It’s very heady to be worshipped, Elenora.”

“They considered you gods?”

“Alright, perhaps god is a bit of a stretch. They thought we were a form of Thoth—one of their mythical gods. He wasn’t real, but they believed he was. He was the giver of knowledge. Maybe that was the draw for me.”

“But you still wear the headdress—even after the world knows the truth about Thoth.”

Emeritus laughed. “True. Maybe a Bennu is more like an old male human who continues to wear a football jersey from his athletic youth. Perhaps the days of the Pharaohs were the Bennu glory days. To the moderns, we’re just firebirds rising from ashes. Being called Firebird or Phoenix is definitely not as glorious as being thought to be a god.”

“Did you personally enjoy being thought of as an Egyptian god?”

“No more than I enjoy being thought of as any other of Mother Gaia’s creatures. That’s the real treasure of being a Bennu. We have the ability to be any creature. I use my shifting gift as often as it suits me to do so. I feel blessed to have such a fun talent.”

Elenora nodded. “Have you ever shifted into a dragon?”

“Sure. I even once became a Thunderbird, but that form is very hard to hold.
