Chapter Ten
Demons and Immortals andâ¦
Kade and I were in a meadow blanketed with flowers. The petals were white, the centers yellowish orange. The flowers were hip high, and I ran my hands softly through them, enjoying the sweet scent and the feel of the petals against my fingers.
Kade watched me but didnât say anything. I guessed because he was disappointed by what Iâd almost done. But I was feeling rather content. I couldâve killed that human. Had I been a human, I had no doubt the police wouldâve justified my reasoning. Pasty had tried to kill me, and they wouldâve seen his death as self-defense. But the scum wasnât dead. And according to Kade that was a very good thing.
I didnât understand why. Was killing a human worse than killing a demon, even if the human acted demonic? I guessed the answer was yes. But I felt the reason had less to do with the evil man and more to do with what would happen to meâmy humanityâif Iâd killed him. I didnât know and Kade wouldnât tell me. He was busy⦠thinking or whatever the hell he was doing.
So I ambled through the flowers, taking a moment to ponder whatâd happened. Iâd almost killed a man. Not a demon, though he acted like one, but a human being. My body began to shake. Because there was still a part of me that craved more, that wanted to go back and finish what Iâd started. It wouldnât be that hard to track him. If heâd been arrested, I could go into the police department and⦠what?
I ripped at a handful of flowers, tearing off the petals and wishing they were Pasty. A silvery warmth trickled down my spine and through my fingers. As before, something happened. The consuming darkness turned to light. I had no idea where it was coming from or why it was happening. As half a demon or more accurately, the spawn of the Devil himself, it made sense that I would side with the dark, with those things that went bump in the night. Iâd believed myself in accordance with the demonic part of my heritage. I figured I had to be. But that didnât change the otherânewâpart of me. Light. It had emanated from me in Pastyâs basement as it was now. There was so much more to what was happening though. Beyond the light was a feeling. One I hadnât experienced before, and while it wasnât bad, it was weird, and foreign, and difficult to comprehend.
The second trial, my mind said, trying to answer my own questions. And I thought that must be it. The second trial was supposed to be all about my emotions. I shook my head. Emotionally, I needed to come to terms with killing either my king or Kade. Not whatever Iâd just experienced.
Sick of the back and forth, I turned, my gaze locking in on Kade. Heâd moved to the far edge of the forest and was facing the trees.
