Dave

They found Dave at his house in Varnes Road. Or, to be more accurate, they found him returning to his house on Varnes Road. Oxford and Albert spotted him at the same time, as the dairy’s security guard made his way back along the road toward his house.

A convenient parking space outside the house next door allowed Oxford to swing his squad car in and be on the pavement to greet Dave. ‘Morning, Dave.’

‘I haven’t been anywhere,’ he said defensively.

Albert raised an eyebrow.

‘Okay,’ said Oxford. ‘I want to show you some mug shots, Dave. Have you got a few minutes now?’

Dave’s feet were twitching on the spot. He wanted to get to his house it seemed, but Albert, Rex and PC Shaw were blocking his route. ‘I’m really busy actually, can we do it another time?’

Albert’s other eyebrow raised. ‘Busy doing what?’ he wanted to know. ‘You’re the night security guard and it’s daylight, plus all the cheese has been stolen so you should be falling over yourself to help this young man recover it. One might be given to think you don’t care about the cheese and the festival.’

Dave sagged under the old man’s words. ‘Yes, yes, of course, sorry. I’m just getting some chores done, that’s all. They can wait, obviously.’ He indicated toward his house. ‘Please, come in.’

Inside Dave’s house, a small terraced house in a village filled with small terraced houses, the décor was aged but tidy. Walking through the house, it was clear to Albert that the man lived alone.

At the kitchen counter, in a long galley kitchen which led to a bathroom at the back of the house where once the outhouses were exactly that, Oxford set his laptop and poked it into life.

‘You know I didn’t see their faces, right?’ Dave reminded both men.

Albert felt his lips twitch as an answer formed but he kept his mouth closed so Oxford could lead – it was his investigation, not Albert’s, he reminded himself.

Oxford had the mugshots ready but took a moment to explain an important point. ‘That’s right, Dave, you did tell us that. I need to inform you that the investigation has grown beyond a simple case of robbery. It is now a murder investigation.’

‘What!’ Dave couldn’t hide his surprise.

‘The name you gave us: Karl Somethingski, turned out to be Karl Tarkovsky, a known thief with a long criminal record. You know that part already, but what you don’t know is that immediately after stealing the Stilton with his associates, he and one other man, who we believe to be,’ he clicked the mousepad to open the tab with Filip’s file, ‘Filip Fiske, were brutally murdered.’ Dave looked ready to vomit. ‘Their bodies were found at the side of the road just outside Peterborough at about the same time you were being rescued from the chiller. Our working theory is that either the buyer, or a third member of the crew, killed Karl and Filip once he had no further use for them.’ He turned the laptop, so it faced Dave.
