Chapter 15

Anacortes Police Department

Tish took the stairs to the front door of the police department two at a time and pushed through the door while Kyle and Sara were still on the sidewalk.

Tobias was leaning on the front desk chatting up the officer at the front desk and drinking a cup of coffee. She made eye contact and he nodded slightly. It took another minute to disentangle himself from the conversation.

“What’s up?” he asked, coming over. Sarah and Kyle arrived, panting slightly.

Tish leaned close to his good ear and spoke at what she hoped was a level that was audible to him, but not to anyone else. “Last summer, Nash had a pocket knife. It had a custom bright blue handle.”

Tobias nodded.

“I’m pretty sure it’s the murder weapon and I’m pretty sure Detective Spring would have seen him with it when they were working on Reginald’s case.”

Tobias nodded again. “Any idea when he stopped carrying it?” he asked. “Or why?”

“I think before Claire went back to school, but I’m not sure. And I’m not sure about why either. My impression is that he lost it.”

“But not recently. It’s been a few months?”

“Yes,” said Tish, confidently.

Tobias itched his nose and sniffed thoughtfully. “OK. Can you figure out how to email or text or whatever all that to Ms. Carmichael if I have the information?”

“Yes,” said Tish.

Tobias patted his pockets until he came up with a business card and handed it over to Tish. And Tish typed it into her phone as a text and then, just to be sure sent it in an email as well.

“How bad is this?” asked Sarah as Tish typed.

“I’m not sure that it is,” said Tobias. “We’ll have to wait and see. Meanwhile, I’m going to go cozy up to the desk sergeant some more. Let me know if you get a response.”

Kyle looked around the police department nervously. “I’m not sure I want to wait here,” he said.

“You can wait in the car,” said Sarah, “but you can’t light up.”

“No point then,” he said dropping down onto the bench.

Tish nervously switched hands on her phone.

“I don’t get it,” said Sarah. “So, we have one suspect we know was there. And as the ex, I’m pretty sure she could have, you know,” she lowered her voice, “acquired the weapon. But we don’t think she did it?”

“She’s tiny,” said Kyle. “I’m not sure she could lift a dead body.”

“Exactly,” said Tish, checking the phone again.

“OK,” said Sarah, nodding. “But our other suspect, who we know is a bit on the stabby side, was definitely on the mainland last Sunday, and probably could have done it, didn’t have access to the weapon.”

“Sure she did,” said Kyle. “I heard they were knocking boots.”

“They only went on two and a half dates,” objected Tish.

“Yeah,” agreed Kyle, with a shrug. “So?”

“Oh my,” said Sarah.

I will punch him in the face.

“OK,” said Tish calmly, “then we have two viable suspects.”

Her phone buzzed in her hand and Tish nearly dropped it.

Thanks. It’s under control.
