Jesus. I never thought I’d get to the day when I could be in my private room and make a private call my girl. I’d already bused through Germany without the chance at a hotel room, but for our first night in London, we posted up in a hotel you’d never get in the States. There was plaid furniture everywhere, and pictures of horses and hounds all over the walls. Didn’t feel like a rock star abode, but I liked it anyway. It was comfortable and didn’t smell the way it looked.

I took a quick, hot shower, with a massive amount of suds, swiping away the grime of a short practice session. Even though Maeve couldn’t smell me through the phone, for the past week I’d been spraying cologne before our calls or making sure my pits were all right. Being clean and smelling good helped me be more alert, when in reality, I was exhausted.

I’d been surrounded by people for over a week now. Not that I sat around pining away exactly. I was too busy to have time to think about it much, but when I did, it hit deep. Missing her cut like a knife. It wasn’t about me, though. Yes, I wanted to feel her skin again and be soaked in warm spicy perfume, but mostly, I worried about her when I was away.

It wasn’t that Maeve was the type who couldn’t take care of herself. She’d gotten through law school, euro-railed across Europe on her own and, of course, did the unspeakable at Uyu. She was smart as shit and tough as nails. The problem with her was that she took the weight of the world onto her shoulders because she thought she could take it. She lived in a pressure cooker.

I turned off the shower and squeezed water from my hair. I wrapped a towel around my waist, threw myself down on the bed, and grabbed my phone.

Video call was the biggest tech gift of this millennia. At first it had connected me with Mom when I’d moved to LA and now, to my girl. I only had to tap my screen twice. It was as easy as rubbing a genie’s lamp. In seconds she appeared, her hair perfectly sleek and her lipstick fresh after what I imagined was her first coffee. It was morning for her.

“Hello, my Dark Fairy,” I growled as seductively as I possibly could at an inanimate object.

Maeve’s face illuminated the dim dusk light in my room, and the blue light from my phone went from being toxic to ethereal as soon as she answered. I laid on my hotel bed, relaxed and warm from the shower, staring at her with hungry eyes.

“Hi, handsome,” she said. “Whatever you say, assume you’re on speaker.” She lifted the phone to show her background. The office was already booming and in full motion. “I can’t afford to blush in front of my fellow soldiers.”

“Damn. Can’t you go off to the bathroom or something?”

She laughed.
