“Now that El Mencho is pissed off and wants to kill my entire family, Jake, why don’t you tell me what the plan is before your cavalry gets here.”

The variables revolved inside Jake’s head. He discerned, all too late, he was out of his league with El Mencho. What seemed like a brilliant plan in his mind turned out to be an insane one. Odds favored Pablo and him dying alongside Alana. Despite all the Scott Company and Bryan had to offer, there would not be a backup, no SWAT team or posse to ride in and save the day. With the tools they did have, they were on their own. When he was a cop, Jake had the full backing and resources of law enforcement, now he was just a civilian. In Atlanta, he worked the worst ‘hoods, but he planned to enter a country he knew nothing about without so much as a map. Jake was no stranger to psychopathic murderers, but he never faced bloodletting cartels, or a demonic, cold-blooded killer of hundreds like El Mencho. Working homicide, he stayed distant from the victims as he worked a crime scene, but now the faces were friends, and he held Alana and Pablo’s lives in his hands. More improbable, he would go undercover as a Sicilian mob boss hoping to pass in front of the narcotrafficker. Second thoughts inundated him.

Whatever made me think I could do this?

Confidence and bravado siphoned from his heart replaced by the chill of fear. All he could do was explain to Pablo what he planned to do and make no promises or guarantees. Maybe after Pablo heard what he had to say, he would call it off.

I must be out of my mind.

He asked Pablo to sit, while he explained how he planned to get them killed. Pablo saw the change in Jake’s demeanor and the fear in his eyes.

“No, Jake, the fact is you and your telephone friends can’t save my Alana. Come tomorrow; we’ll be dead.”

From the sound of his anger, Jake thought Pablo might just as well save him the trip and beat him to death right in his living room. Caity growled fiercely, her white fangs in full view. Pablo looked at Caity then Jake. He sat on the couch and put his hands over his face. Jake calmed Caity, and then sat next to Pablo. Caity continued to warn Pablo with her snarl, and never took her eyes off the MexiKing. Jake had hesitated for a second before he put his hand on Pablo’s shoulder. It was truth time.

“I don’t know a thing about Mexico, the geography, the players. Just like the time I first walked up to your porch with all those weapons trained on me. You grabbed me, stuck a nine-millimeter to my head, and dragged me inside your home. I expected to talk on the porch. I never expected you would react like you did. I needed something from you, information, and I ended up a hostage.
