CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Sarah Good’s labor came fast and furiously. The pain sliced through her lower back and even into her upper legs. It hurt so much she almost begged God to take her life. Then, little Dorcas’ face came to mind. She had to hold on. Her daughter needed her. She’d get out of here. These ridiculous accusations would cease, and she’d be set free. Surely, she wouldn’t be convicted of witchcraft. God couldn’t be so cruel. Hadn’t he done enough to her?

Now that she’d been moved to Ipswich jail, to be near a midwife, she was alone. Sarah didn’t know why she missed the slave and Goody Osbourne. It’s not as if the three of them held many conversations in the watch house. The other two were now in the Salem jail, awaiting trial. Sarah feared the trial. So many disliked her. Now Sarah regretted making so many enemies. She thought of Rebecca Nurse. Just maybe she still held some compassion for Sarah. Of course, Sarah hadn’t given her a reason to. Pain brought her back to the moment. The sheriff still hadn’t returned with the midwife.

She didn’t want to have her baby in jail, under these circumstances. It would have been bad enough to have a baby in someone’s barn. At least here it was a bit warmer than the watch house, though, and now she only had to contend with her own stench.
