Chapter 11
Grant stood in the doorframe of the training room. Auria divided the warriors into four groups, each with a leader. White team was headed by Deimos and blue answered to Photius. Auria took red team and Fazzio was assigned black. Each of them would play a different role in the fightersâ training. No surprise, Auria chose to be drill sergeant. His soldiers werenât happy with just one of them heading a team, but Grant made it clear they were allowed a chance to prove their abilities to the general of his army and she hadnât been unimpressed. Rumor was, he might not be thinking with his head. Two heads were better than one. At least that was true when it came to his wife.
âSeems she came through after all.â Gabriel shrugged as he sauntered down the corridor and stopped next to him. Black feathered wings hung behind his back. A dark shirt and pants seemed out of place on his lanky, awkward frame when once heâd possessed ungodly beauty and been covered in a pristine white robe.
âWhich is more than I can say for you. Where have you been?â Days without a glimpse of him gave him cause for worry. Had fear of the endgame driven Gabriel to play both sides? He wouldnât be surprised. One thing the fallen angel knew well was how to survive. Soon enough, Gabriel wouldnât be doing so on his back. His wife plotted how she wanted to punish him.
âStaying out of sight since you donât want me upsetting your precious lamb. What do you need me for?â A sarcastic tone laced Gabrielâs words. His defiant gaze met his. Not brave. Stupid.
âYou know damned well what your role in this will be.â Soon Gabriel would suffer until he begged for death, punishment for what heâd done to his wife. âTil then he needed to keep a cool head. If she didnât make the fallen angel beg for death, he would. âDonât forget you came to me for help.â
âI havenât. As soon as the warriors are ready, we can move in.â Gabriel leaned closer, glancing over at Auria with a spark of interest. âAny sign of Michael sniffing around her?â
Fisting his hands, he shook his head. What wasnât Gabriel telling him? His belief that the general of heavenâs army would be interested in his wife now seemed more than a hunch.
âGood. Letâs hope she wonât flip sides.â He stepped back and grinned.
He grabbed Gabriel by his shirt, shoved him into the wall. âWhy would she?â
âThe man is pretty convincing and not without his charms. If you know what I mean.â Gabriel gripped his forearm. âWhy do you think he was a good choice of a male for you to become?â
He didnât need any reminding who Etienne was based on--Archangel Michael. His wife wanted Etienne more than any other. He leaned in. Gabriel wanted to taunt him with the fact that the heavenly creature was a better match for his wife than he. âMichael would be making a grave error if he advanced on my wife in a way other than platonic.
