FLAMING PARROT | Mark Pytlos

Acrylic on cotton canvas, 24" × 36" (61cm × 91cm)

My studio was the perfect setting for this floral work. I worked from my photograph using a dual action Iwata HP-C Plus airbrush on a prepared canvas, starting the image freehand in a loose style by following the general shape of the petals using a local color of the floral. My airbrush paints of choice are Golden’s acrylic airbrush colors. I often use airbrush while painting with acrylics for the softness and ability to smoothly blend colors right on the surface. Since acrylic is a fast drying medium, it allows me to use multiple layers in a short period of time.

Our eyes are pleased with primary colors and their complementaries all at once. When it boils down to selecting a certain hue, I prefer to mix my own colors. I always try to address the same hue throughout the image since switching between colors requires cleaning of the equipment at the risk of “dirty colors.” Here I used earthly colors for the veins in the petals and for some of the forms within. Then I selected a black hue for the background plus added touches of mauve to convey the mood and bring out the vibrancy of the primary colors in this unique tulip. After adding some final details with fine brushes, I concluded the work with an application of Golden Archival varnish to restore each color’s vibrancy. The fiery flame-like highlights contributed to the painting’s name, Flaming Parrot.
