Chapter 15 A Meeting with Death

Lynx followed me inside the prison. They had to specially design it around her abilities. She wouldn’t be allowed to punch the ground or else that super armor would kick in again. The other couldn’t fashion anything metal into a scissor shape, and any time she made some paper to turn into a paper fan, she had to be hosed to dissolve said paper.

The white clad one, though they both now wore orange, had two chains mounted to the ceiling. The bracket had been scored in with thick bolts, but they were bent out of shape slightly. She had been stronger than she looked.

“Well, isn’t this an interesting visit? What could you possibly want?” she said, glaring at me.

“You’re from another plane of existence, and you knew how to get certain drugs from other worlds, so I was wondering if you could tell me what this is,” I said, holding up the black bag.

“That’s all? You just want to use me like your own encyclopedia?” She almost sounded offended, though mostly just bored.

“That’s about it, yeah. The flame cult—which while they might kill me, they’d never let you try to take power again—was scorching the World Trade Center’s basement to make this.”

“And… What exactly is the World Trade Center?” she asked.

“It was a building where a lot of, uh, I think trade deals happened?” I looked at Lynx.

“Do you honestly not know?” he asked.

“Was? It is no longer?” she asked.

“Right,” I said. “Not native to the plane. Yeah, the building was destroyed in a terrorist attack… One evidently not as well thought out as yours.”

“Mmmm, flattery. I do miss its gentle prick,” she said, smiling deviously at me. “Was this event considered a tragedy?”

Lynx looked rather shocked to find her so cooperative. “Yeah. Everyone in the city was shook, and it led to a lot of security and—”

“Then these are the ashes of a tragedy, and I can see why a flame cult might wish to make use of it.”

“What would that be?” I asked.

“I dare say, it is quite boring around here. The guards have me in such an undignified pose, and there’s only gymnastics to keep me sane…” She looked not at me but at Lynx.

“You want to have some entertainment in your cell?” he asked. “Then you’ll tell us?”

“That depends on what you mean by entertainment and in my cell. If you’re to put some gladiators in here to poke and prod at me, I dare say their rotting corpses will be far from entertaining after too long… I need a promise of something more lasting.”

I recoiled. “Gladiators? What kinda entertainment was there on your home plane?”

“I was thinking more along the lines of a TV possibly…outside the cell,” Lynx said.

“TV,” she repeated. “Those letters were on a lot of the vehicles that the people who covered our coop announcement had. I assume some organization uses it to denote something?”

“Short for television. A device that takes signals and makes them into videos. Some news channels would have it in their name, yeah,” he explained.
