It took me a week to get up the courage to go and talk to Jasmine, and it was a long week. Sheâd destroyed her yard, put all the lawn ornaments around willy-nilly, and painted the house three different colors.
She kept texting me that we needed to talk, but I was still stinging from the things she said. That I didnât like her, that I was just using her in some way, that I was old, not her type. Those were all things she said, and she couldnât take them back.
I wasnât even sure she wanted to. From the way it sounded, she meant every word she said, and how did we come back from that? I could admit to myself that it stung more because I did like her than for any other reason. I wasnât insecure about my age. Iâd reached my early forties without being worried about middle age, so I wasnât going to let my irritating neighbor make me feel bad about it.
That's all she was, right? An irritating neighbor that I happened to be extremely attracted to. I didnât have feelings for her. Did I?
I thought about how it felt when she invited some guy over to her house, how Iâd seen him hug her and it felt like my stomach was full of rocks. If we werenât anything to each other, would she invite him back over? Would she start dating again? I didnât know how I could handle that.
I took in a deep breath, deciding that I had to at least talk to her, see if maybe we could call a truce. No matter how confusing my feelings were, I had to at least make peace so that we could live together in harmony, right?
It had been a few days before Iâd even so much as looked at the house. It drove me crazy, all the lawn ornaments, the mess in her yard. I hated it, but I wasnât ready to talk to her, so I stayed in the house. It wasnât until I saw the beautiful mural she'd painted on the side of the house that I'd contacted her.
My heart felt warm when I looked at it, my chest expanding. She was a wonderful artist. The brush strokes were perfect, everything in its place, and I was surprised to see it. Iâd expected her to be some sort of abstract artist that threw paint on a canvas and called it art.
It turned out Jasmine Donaldson had surprises up her sleeve, and I couldnât deny to myself that I was interested in learning more. Maybe there was a way that I could salvage things so that we could at least be friends. The fact that she was my best friendâs daughter meant that I couldnât touch her again no matter how much I wanted to. Frank had gotten me through some of the worst parts of my divorce, and I was loyal to him. Heâd probably kill me if he knew, and even though I could probably take him down given my MMA training, I wouldnât.
