Chapter Thirteen

I paced nervously in the kitchen, trying to count the minutes since Nathaniel left. It had been nearly an hour and a half. They should be back any minute.

“Why are you so damn nervous?” Mary-Beth asked as she pulled the plates from the cupboard and went to set the four of them on the massive table.

“Have you never met Borden?” I asked as I looked outside at the skies. There was a gray haze in the sky to the north, but it wasn’t a full-on storm. “His emotions can cause volatile weather. His father, who cut him off, just died. You don’t expect a little fall out from that?”

Mary-Beth shrugged and leaned against the counter. “I guess I haven’t thought about it. Sometimes I think you were meant to have two soul mates. No one reads him quite like you do, Margot.”

I stopped in my tracks at that and my eyes ripped to her.

“Don’t say that,” I said around a thick throat.

She shrugged again. “Sorry. It’s just kind of true. It’s obvious he’s in love with you. And even though you and Nathaniel were clearly made for each other like no one in the history of the planet, you and Borden have this…jive about you. I’m just saying.” She held her hands up in surrender.

“Can we please not talk about it?” I said, and with my words, I confirmed everything she had just said, without meaning to. “You’re not making things any easier. We just…need to be supportive of him, whatever happened.”

Just then, I heard the garage opening and then the sound of the car as it pulled in.

My mouth felt dry and once more, I glanced outside. So far, the gray haze in the sky stayed further north.

That was a good sign.

The door opened, and I heard their footsteps. They stepped around the corner, and my eyes landed on Nathaniel, and then Borden.

“Welcome home,” I said, offering Borden a cautious smile.

He gave me a small, ingenuine one in return.

“Dinner’s ready. Hope everyone is hungry.”

I grabbed one pot and carried it to the table, followed by Mary-Beth and Nathaniel with the rest of the food. We set it all on the table, and we all sat down together.

It had been awkward, but I’d asked all of the students to make themselves scarce tonight. They’d all eaten an early dinner and headed to their bedrooms, or out into town, or to the beach.

Tonight, it just needed to be the four of us, who were all in this together originally.

“How was your flight?” I asked in mindless conversation as I served my food onto my plate.

“Fine,” Borden said with the tiniest of huffs, which told me that he knew exactly what I was doing.

We finished dishing up. Borden grabbed his fork and knife, but just sat there, staring at a blank space on the table.

“My father knew he was going to die, that’s why he finally asked to see me,” he said, diving right into it, because he was never one to beat around the bush.
