I met Velkan’s steely gaze. Sword in hand, he walked around me, sizing me up.

HALLPYAAAA GYAAAAARHH

The growls and snarls of the fighting wolves were louder than the battle sounds raging near Legacy Academy. Rusty was getting his ass kicked. I had to do something.

“Obliundis.” I held out my palm and my scythe magically appeared in my hand.

Rusty and one of the demon wolves were in a vicious battle, standing on their back legs, biting and clawing each other. Blood and fur were flying into the air. I swung immediately, hitting Rusty’s opponent.

YELP

The wolf whimpered and rolled like a fur ball until it hit a tree. The beast got to its feet unsteadily and shook its large head, dazed. Its teeth were stained with blood.

Still in wolf form, Rusty was a mess of blood. He was panting, wobbling on his legs, and I knew he couldn’t last much longer.

Grrrr Grrr Grrrr

Another wolf bit at Rusty’s hind leg and he yelped.

I swung again, knocking the beast away. Blood burst from his nose and he growled as he retreated from Rusty and me.

The demon wolves formed a line and stepped a little closer, but still beyond the reach of my scythe. I rushed in front of Rusty, brandishing my weapon. If they attacked all at once, we were screwed.

Suddenly, I remembered another spell. I didn’t know if it would work, but I had to try.

My heart pounding furiously, I aimed my scythe at one of the demon wolves. “Ejecite!”

A white light blasted out of the scythe, hitting one of the beasts.

It yapped in pain. The light lifted the beast off the ground and sent it flying across the meadow.

The wolf landed in a heap next to Velkan, who narrowed his red eyes at me.

“That wasn’t very nice, Julie.”

I glanced over at the archangels. None of them moved a muscle to help me or Rusty. Damn them.

Still in wolf form, Rusty collapsed onto his side, panting, his tongue lolling out of his mouth. The three remaining demon wolves snarled, blood dripping from their teeth. I stood over him, hoping he wouldn’t pass out.

Anger flared through me, and I glared at Velkan. “Call off your wolves.”

He headed toward me. “And if I don’t? What are you going to do about it?”

“I’ll kill them.” My voice sounded braver than I felt.

“I don’t think so.” He whistled and the wolves fanned out behind him.

He stood a few feet away from me. His shadow covered me, making me feel tiny, like David facing Goliath. All muscle and full of hate, Velkan was twice the size of me. Every instinct told me to run, but I refused to leave Rusty.

Velkan motioned with his hand. “You’re pretty good with that scythe, Julie.” He moved his fingers gently over his blade and then flashed a deadly look at me. “Time to see how good you really are.”

Beads of sweat broke out across my forehead. Ignoring the fear thundering through me, I lifted up my chin. “I’m game. Let’s go.”

Rusty shifted back into a human.
