CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Amber stood in the middle of Jack Morrisonâs home, trying to work out how to find him before it was too late.
She didnât know where he might be and what he might be up to. One horrific possibility presented itself: he might already be out there, putting another winch in place, trying to abduct another victim. That thought made her blood run cold.
âWe need to search the surrounding area,â Amber said, breaking the silence. âFrancesca, can you get a team out here to help us?â
The detective nodded, pulling out her phone to make the call. Meanwhile, Simon was already searching the house for any clues that might give them a lead on where Morrison had gone.
As they waited for backup, Amber couldnât shake the feeling that they were running out of time. Every minute that passed without finding Morrison was a minute in which another victim could be taken.
âIâll get the whole force searching for him,â Francesca said. âIf any of them spot him, theyâll bring him in.â
Yet it didnât feel like enough to simply sit there and wait for the Westford PD to bring in Jack Morrison for the killings.
âWe need to move fast,â Amber said to Simon. âWe need to get out there and search for him ourselves.â
Simon shook his head. âWe donât know Westford, and the odds of running into a suspect at random are thousands to one. Let the local cops search the area. We can do more good here.â
Amber wasnât sure how they would be able to do that. But Simon had a point. They were FBI agents, not local police. They needed to work with the resources they had and stay focused on finding any evidence that might connect Morrison to the murders. They needed to build their case as well as try to find him.
âOkay,â she said reluctantly. âBut we need to keep searching this place. There has to be something here. I donât believe that itâs completely empty and ordinary. Maybe thereâs even something here that might suggest where heâs gone.â
They split up, combing through every inch of the bungalow. Simon searched the bedroom, while Amber went through the bathroom and kitchen.
âIâm going to start calling his friends and family,â Francesca said. âSee if anyone knows where he might have gone.â
Amber nodded absentmindedly, her focus solely on finding something in the house, anything, that might give them a lead.
She opened a drawer in the kitchen, looking through old receipts and bills. She went through them one by one, looking for any address that Morrison might have gone to, any location where he might be hiding out.
âIf heâs not here, does that mean that heâs hiding out somewhere?â Amber wondered aloud. âMight he have gone somewhere else to commit his crimes if he thought the police were looking for him?â
âWell, he isnât here,â Francesca pointed out, as if it were obvious that Morrison must be somewhere else.
âNo, I mean that he might have found a safe house or something,â Amber said.
âRather than come back here?â Simon said.
